PUPILS CHARGE ELDERS ASSUME HITLER" ROLES

Parents, Teachers Placed ‘On Trial’ in Effort to Soive Problems.

EVANSTON, nl, April (U. P)— High school pupils brought their elders to “trial” in Municipal Court today charged with “Hitlerizing” in the home. Society “fails to give youth practical examples in practicing democracy” and seeks to “force opinions youth,” said one indictment returned by a “Grand Jury” of 20 ‘teen-age boys and girls. Judge William Glynn, high school sophomore, began the first of four trials in a courtroom crowded with pupil prosecutors, adult defense counsel and spectators representing the accusers and the accused. Other indictments charged grownups with failures and shortcomings in their handling of schools, churches and youth itself.

Started In “Y”

Prosecutors accused both parents and teachers of failure to apply democracy to their children. Parents should provide more sex education and be more liberal about late hours, money and use of the family automobile, they asserted. Teachers were accused of stuffing their arbitrary opinions down the student's throat rather than convincing him in a democratic manner. G. B. Moser, city boys’ work secretary, explained the evolution of the trial from a Y. M. C. A. conference group. “The boys decided to have this trial to stimulate more interest. They invited their girl acquaintances to take part and selected the ‘Grand Jury,’ which drew up the ‘indictments.’ “Boy and girl judges were elected. Prosecuting attorneys were selected, and interested adults were invited to act as ‘defense attorneys.”

Jury but No Verdict

Factual material. gathered by the pupils during spring vacation, was presented. The jury, composed of seven pupils and five adults, will not render a “guilty or not guilty” verdict but will search for solutions to the problems presented. City officials, parents and attornevs co-operated with the trial. Indictments were returned against: (1) The church, charged with failing to make its services attractive, “keeping God and religion inside the church,” and “practices unbecoming to religion.” (2) Parents, charged above. (3) Boys, charged with ‘personal neglect, being too polite or not polite enough, excessive swearing and show-off driving.”

VALPARAISO, April 6 (U. P)— Three personal injury suits asking damages of nearly $171,000 were on file today in the Porter County Circuit Court against the Midway Transit Co. of Benton Harbor, Mich.
