SPAY, APRIL 6, U. S. USES RADIO T0 BOOST ARMY RESERVE QUOTA
Ex-Soldiers Invited to Join. ‘Minute Men’ Lists for Emergency Call.
WASHINGTON, April 6 (U. P).— The War Department initiated al series of radio broadcasts today, inviting ex-soldiers of the Regular | Army to enlist as “mifute men” in the Regular Army Reserve. The broadcasts will be repeated over key radio stations in all Army corps areas of the country. They will emphasize that there will be 18,000 vacancies annually in the enlisted reserve for the next five years. An enlisted reserve strength of 75.000 was authorized by Congress last year and the War Department said enrollment was lagging. It hopes to correct this condition by calling attention to the program. All men under 36 who have one year's continuous service in the Regular Army and are physically fit are eligible. They will be paid $24 a year and will not be required to train or serve except in a national emergency. The enlistment campaign began | last September, and up to Oct. 25; only 1719 enrollments were received. | On Jan. 18 enrollments totaled only! 5100. Officials estimated that there] would be 95500 eligibles by July 1] and an additional 28,7700 during 1940.
Enlistment Reported
Slow Here, Also |
Lieut.-Col. J. H. Davidson of Ft. Harrison said today that he hoped | the broadcasts would result in ad-| ditional enlistments and stated that enlistment at the post had been | “very slow.” “Many men.” he said, “have been reluctant to enlist in the reserve because they feared such enlist-]| ment might mean regular service. | This would only result in case of a| national emergency.” Col. Davidson stated he would mention the enlistment program in| his Army Day broadcast. |

Earlier, | when asked if he believed automo- | bile production and sales would ex- | ceed those of 1937, Mr. Ford said: “Oh, my, ves, way ahead of 1937. LOS ANGELES, April 8 (U. P.).—A policeman testified that Jack Hummer, 69, was drunk; that he backed into a patrol car; he staggered; he smelled of alcohol; his speech was thick. “I did not stagger, your Honor,” protested Hummer, “I am merely bow-legged’—and he demonstrated. “What about smelling of alcohol?” asked Judge Charles Johnson. “That was wood alcohol I rubbed on my knee for my rheumatism.” “And the thick speech?” “I had a wad of tobacco in my mouth,” said Hummer doggedly. I was not drunk.” The jury acquitted him.
