To More Than 4 Points On N. Y. Board.
A NEW YORK, April 6 (U. P)—
Trading quieted in the early afternoon dealings on the stock exchange with prices around the lows of
the day and sme for the year and A
longer in the leading issues.
Some of the leaders came back from their bottom levels of the day on short covering. In the absence of new demand, however, the gains from the lows barely held. Allied Chemical extended its morning loss to 8 points, making a new low at 155. Du Pont fell 5 points. A long list showed declines ranging to more than 4 points, The market was hardest hit late i nthe first hour when selling was so heavy that the tape fell behind.
It caught up in a few minutes and <Q
a somewhat steadier tone was noted. Traders were nervous over the
foreign situation. No real demand 0
was noted. Bonds Turn Lower

Domestic corporation liens held about steady through the first hour but broke sharply when selling of stocks spread to the bond market. Losses were extended to around 2 points in the leaders with rails and heavy industrials under greatest pressure. . Utilities generally had small losses. Foreign dollar loans weakened under lead of European issues. U. S. Government obligations eased 1-32
to 6-32 point under light selling. 3

CHICAGO, April 6 (U. P)— Wheat prices displayed a firm undertone on the Chicago Board of Trade today, reflecting higher outside markets and some concern over European developments. At the end of the first hour wheat was up % to 3 cent; corn up %* to 4 cent, and oats unchanged to 14 cent higher. Increased tension in Europe was evidenced by a further break in securities which led to some demand for wheat. There was buying of May wheat against sales of the deferred months by elevator interests. Reports from the southwest winter wheat belt indicated below freezing temperatures in Kansas, along with rain and snow. The forecast was for mostly clear and continued cold weather. Liverpool wheat closed unchanged to 1% cent higher in today’s short preholiday session. There was some covering on European developments. Winnipeg was % to % cent higher at the end of an hour’s trading. Local wheat traders were also inclined to cover commitments before the holiday tomorrow.

than that of the fourth quarter of last year, despite the fact that trade quarters had anticipated a moderate gain for the period. It pointed out, also, that backlogs accumulated late in 1938, which had been bolstering production schedules, are being cleared up.
Even Weather Blamed
«The crisis in Europe, the failure of the Washington Administration to adopt a constructive policy toward business, weakness in the stock market and even the weather are blamed for the apparent halting of improvement in steel and related lines,” the publication said. “The most discouraging factor of the week's business news,” it added, «js a sharp reduction in automobile schedules, indicating that April assemblies may be well below those of March, whereas in every year of the past decade, except 1938, April production has exceeded that of March. Last week's assemblies showed a small drop, but there will undoubtedly be a larger one this week as some plants, which only recently went on a five-day week, have dropped back to three or fourday schedules.” The magazine said that a numper of rail orders have been completed, tending to curtail mill schedules, and that private pbuilding activity has not developed as rapidly as had been hoped.
Cannot Thrive on U. S. Spending
«The failure of private work to go ahead in the volume that was hoped for again calls attention to the fact that the steel industry cannot thrive alone on Government spending, which last year accounted for less than 5 per cent of total steel orders placed direct with the mills.” Among the favorable items in the week's developments, however, the Iron Age cited a slight improvement in railroad buying after the recent lull. In addition, it pointed out that structural steel lettings have
not yet reflected the “vast sums set aside for PWA work,” which may

The Iron Age estimated the na-

at 541% per cent of capacity, off 1, point, and reported its scrap composite price at $15.25 a ton, off 4 cents.

FORECASTS GAIN IN OIL RESERVE
S. J. Pirson Describes Chemical Test of Gas Seepage.
PITTSBURGH, April 8 (U. P).— Increases in the known reserves of petroleum were forecast today in a prospecting method described by Sylvain J. Pirson, of the petroleum and natural gas department of Pennsylvania State College. He spoke yesterday at the convention of the Eastern District, Division of Production, of the American Petroleum Institute. Advising petroleum experts meeting here in a two-day convention that the soil gas survey methods of prospecting for oil and gas structures offer the greatest possible chances of increasing known reserves, Mr, Pirson said this method has been employed mostly in the Gulf Coast fields of Texas and Louisiana. : Pointing out that the process was first found in Germany and then developed largely in Russia, Mr. Pirson said only five American companies have utilized the process so far. 'The process involves chemical analysis of the invariable seepage to the surface of gases where gas or oil fields are located.
UTILITY ‘AGREES TO SEC REQUIREMENTS
NEW YORK, April 6 (U. P)— The Associated Gas & Electric Co. today capitulated to the accounting requirements of the Securities & Exchange Commission by filing with the Federal agency amendments to its registration statements and its annual reports for 1934 to 1937, inclusive. Officials of the billion dollar utility system in a. formal statement said they “still believed” that the original statements and reports filed were in accordance with proper accounting principles at the time, but that the decision to comply with the SEC methods was made because of a desire to cooperate with the agency. On Jan. 12 last the commission ordered that the utility show cause
istration and listing on various ex-
accounting items in the annual reports and in the registration statements contained “false and misleading” material.
