WONDER DRUG AS AID INT. B, FIGHT FORESEEN
Sufanilamide Derivative Is
Found Effective, Chemists Told.
BALTIMORE, Md. April 6 (U. P.).—A group of New Jersey chemists reported today that a derivative of sulfanilamide, the wonder drug that has proved effective against several diseases, may provide a new means of fighting tuberculosis and leprosy. They emphasized that the findings were not conclusive. Efficacy of the new compound, dodecanoyl-sulfanilamide, was noted | by Dr. Frank R. Climenko of the| research division of Calco Chemical Co. Bound Brook, N. J. The ex-|
periments were described to the |
American Chemical Society by his colleagues, Dr. M. L. Crossley. E. H. Northey and Martin E. Hulquist.
Aids Other Diseases
Sulfanilamide already has proved effective against streptococcic infections, gonorrhea and some other diseases. Another form, sulfpapyradine, has been found effective in treating influenza and pneumonia. | The new compound, Dr. Crossley said, is a combination of sulfanilamide with a part of a fat. It pene-
trates fatty tissue, carrying the] therapeutic properties of sulfanila- | mide to the offending bacillus. | “It should be pointed out that the |

LUDLOW WANTS
FAIR WPA PROBE
Declares No ‘Smear’ Campaign Planned; Springer Raps ‘Hidden Taxes.’
Times Special WASHINGTON, April 6—As a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee charged with investigating the WPA, Rep. Louis Ludlow (D. Ind.) today asserted that
‘| he does not expect to engage in any
“smear campaign.” “We have been given $25,000 to carry on this investigation in a purely fact-finding manner,” Rep. Ludlow said. “An attorney and investigators will be employed and the whole thing will be conducted in a fair and impartial way. “I expect the committee to pass on the facts and present them to the House in a judicial style.”
Springer Charges WPA Waste
Rep. Ludlow argued and voted for the 100 million dollar additional for
WPA, which was recommended by the Appropriations Committee. Rep. Raymond S. Springer (R. Ind.), who voted against it, assailed alleged WPA wastefulness in the Congressional Record today and condemned the “hidden taxes” which he said the Government now levies on everyone. : “Bach loaf of bread purchased for the family table contains its tax for the Government,” Rep. Springer said. “Likewise, each suit of clothes, hat, dress, hose and every essential for family use is the subject of Government tax. The average man steadily employed earns approximately $100 per month. In expending that sum throughout the year, he pays Government taxes aggregating $231.72.

Inventor Gives Fallen Arches Upholstered Luxury.
ASHINGTON, April 6 (U, P.) Introducing: A new luxury the solid coms fort inner-spring shoe, designed to let fallen arches fall with the greatest of ease. John Gruber of New York City received the patent—Number 2 153,304—and therewith gave to the world a shoe with a bouncing in< sole which provides automatic air« cooling for the overworked dogs. To outward appearances, Mr. Gruber’s invention is just an ordinary shoe. And the same goes for the inside. But under the leathercovered insole is a small but powserful spring that stretches the full
