WINTER WHEAT CROP FOREGAST NEAR AVERAGE

Rains, Snows Give Grain New Lease on Life, Report Reveals.

CHICAGO, April 4 (U. P)— Bountiful snows and rains during the last two months have given the drought-stricken winter wheat crop a new lease on life, a United Press survey revealed today. Crop experts and observers scattered through the heart of the wheat belt generaily agreed that the crop, which last fall got off to a poor start, now promises nearly an average yield. E. M. Miller of Shields and Co, and C. M. Galvin of James E. Belinett and Co., Chicago private experts, placed the probable winter wheat production at 524 and 550 million bushels respectively. S. D. Flora, Federal meterologist at Topeka, Kas. reported “general condition of the Kansas wheat crop is excellent. Normal rainfall from now on will insure a fine crop.”

Private Crop Experts

Forecast Under ’38

CHICAGO, April 4 (U. P)— Private crop experts today forecast a winter wheat production of 540

million bushels, far below the 1938 harvest of 687 million bushels but close to the 1927-36 average yield of 546 million bushels. The average estimate exceeded by 55 million bushels the last Government prediction of 485 million bushels made last December, indicating considerable improvement in prospects during the winter. This substantiated a United Press survey revealed that generous precipitation during the past two months had greatly improved crop conditions in the southwest. INVESTMENT FIRM SUIT IS DISMISSED

A receivership suit filed against the Fidelity Investment Co. of Wheeling, W. Va., several weeks ago by Fred Bates Johnson, attorney, was dismissed today in Superior

The suit followed the firm's legal difficulties in West Virginia, which since have been cleared up. Mr. Johnson, in dismissing the local suit, explained it was merely a precautionary measure to prevent withdrawal of about $150,000 on deposit with the Indiana State Auditor as a protection to local contract holders. He said that a Federal Court in West Virginia examined the firm's financial status and, finding it solvent, denied a Federal receivership petition there, and the company has resumed business in the various states in which it operated, including Indiana.

One of the few living survivors of the Titantic disaster, Andrew McNally IF, who supervises the making of 100 million maps a year, will be interviewed by Fred Sullivan on the Inside Story program at 9:30 tonight, NBC-Blue.

Mr. McNally wili tell the inside story of the costs of changing American and European maps each year. He will explain why it is much more costly to change American maps than European maps—it seems that 2000 new towns are added and about 1000 dropped each year in America. Mrs. John Larson, Highland Park, Ill, another Titanic survivor, will describe scenes aboard the ship and will give her own opinion of how passengers might have been saved from drowning. Milton Branner, creator of the Winnie Winkle comic strip, will tell the inside facts about how such cartoon serials are conceived and drawn.

In a return engagement by popular demand, Dorothy Parker will return to the “Information Please” program at 7:30 tonight, NBC-Blue, for another “stumper” session with Clifton Fadiman. RADIO

“Double-or-nothing” night for Johnny Mercer's “fluff box” will be celebrated on Benny Goodman's Swing Caravan at 8:30 tonight, CBS-WFBM, when the program re turns to New York for two broadcasts before going on the road again. Instead of the customary 50cent fine for a “fluff” (mispro=nounced word or phrase), Benny, Johnny and the boys will have to pay $5 for every time they muff a line. 2 ” ” ’ Reports are that WEAPF’s “Circle” program finally has given up its ate tempt to fill an hour with casual and informal conversation and has turned to straight variety stuff. The program has been a valiant attempt to break away from the standard radio pattern, despite its apparent failure. The only other attempt at entertainment in small talk is the Bing Crosby hour. That one began with an entirely different pattern, evolving its current style as Bing himself grew more at ease reading a script. Heroic measures were needed to teach Bing the secret of light comedy. When he began this program four years ago, he protested he was a singer, not a talker, and would get nothing but trouble for trying to preside as master of ceremonies. His talk during the first few

programs indicated that he was correct. Bing was stilted and wooden, altogether unlike the

pleasant person he is off stage. To break down his cold reserve, the director began writing questions into the guest star’s script without letting Bing know about them. In the midst of ah introduction would come a question, “How’s your golf lately, Bing?” or something about the horses. Bing protested angrily about those at first, finally got used
