CITY'S GUESS ON TAX VALUES OF PROPERTY LOW

Collection of $18,438 More Revenue From Taxes Made Possible.

The assessed valuation of taxable property in Indianapolis in 1938 was $1,684,230 greater than an estimate of $510,414,330 on which most of the 1939 tax rate was based, the City Controller's Office has been informed.

Farm Bureau Furnishes Tractor to Plow at Rhodius Park.

About 1000 Indianapolis “farmers” have opened the WPA’s annual community gardens project in the city. : A tractor furnished by the Indiana Farm Bureau is being used to plow a 25-acre tract at Rhodius Park which will be divided into 200 gardens, each 50 by 100 feet in area. “Persons cultivating the gardens are supervised by expert gardeners

by the County Auditor, was $512,098,560.

This means that the City can collect an estimated $18,438 more revenue on the revised valuation.

More for General Fund

Under the valuation which was estimated last year, the tax collections would have totaled $6,638,762. On the new valuation, the estimated tax collections are expected to be about $6,657,200. The City general fund, it is expected, will receive $11,505.78 more than the $3,642,316.44 expected on the basis of the estimated valuation. Deputy City Controller Herschel M. Tebay said that the valuation of 510 millions was estimated last year for budget making purposes. The actual calculation of 512 millions was reached after several adJustments had been made by the State Tax Board, he said.

Deficiencies Come First

The additional money will be used to fill any deficiencies in budget estimates, he said. If unused by the end of the year, it will revert to the City General fund as an unexpended balance for 1940, he said. The revised valuation is only $484,300 less than the 1937 valuation. Assessed valuation in Indianapolis has been dropping steadily since 1930, when it stood at a 10-year peak of $691,326,210. Last year’s actual® valuation represents a drop of $179,227,650 from that peak.

Dill, superintendent. “But, with the development of farm machinery it has been possible to produce the same amount of food with fewer boys,” Dr. Dill said. As g result, the boys are being shifted to industrial work.

“If boys are to make satisfactory social adjustment in life, they must be prepared to meet the economic and industrial competition of society,” Dr. Dill said. In addition to industrial classes and work in that field a recreational

GOURT DELAYS BAR ON RAIL ABANDONING

The Federal District Court today had issued a temporary injunction restraining the Indiana Public Service Commission from enforcing an order which prevented the Southern Railroad from abandoning two Indiana passenger trains. The court’s order was made temporary pending final hearing. About a year ago the railroad petitioned the Commission to abandon trains between Evansville and New Albany. The Commission, on Oct. 28, denied the petition. The Federal Court order, if made permanent, will permit the railroad to abandon the trains. The case is considered by other railroads as a test of any future plans to abandon trains.

DEADLY MOSQUITO PLANE HITCH-HIKER

WASHINGTON, March 30 (U. P.). —U. S. Public Health Service officials were confident today that their

rigorous quarantine would exclude from this country a deadly African mosquito which hitch-hikes on airplanes. Known to scientists as the anopheles gambiae, the msquitoes, highly infected carriers of a virulent type of malaria, were believed to have been carried to Brazil aboard planes that pioneered air routes from Africa a decade ago. According to a report recently published by the Rockefeller Foundation, anopheles gambiae were respongible for the death of as much as 10 per cent of the population in certain areas of Brazil. Officials said extreme precatuions taken by the Health Service, and co-operation of Pan-American Airways has keep the

insect outside the United States.
