A rmsirons - Has Job on His Hands

Day Thinks Time Has Come For Henry to Lose Ring Title.

By HENRY SUPER United Press Staff Correspondent + NEW YORK. March 30. — It Sounds like the same story that’s been written so many times ‘and from so many places—the one about Henry Armstrong getting ready to {defend his welterweight title again. : But this time it has a new twist “hecause the little Los Angeles Ne- | gro stands a moderate chance of | ‘walking back to the dressing room fomorrow night minus the title. . Pive times Armstrong nas climbed ‘into the ring with the 147-pound .erown he won from Barney ROSS | ‘last May at stake. ping he left the squared circle with the words “winner and still chamon” echoing in his ears. And for that reason—the fact that EArmstrong has been working too ‘hard these past three or’ four :months—a broad- shouldered, darkthaired young man named Davey Day from Chicago thinks that ‘Henry's number is about due to ‘come up. o Day, a stablemate of Ross who ‘since has retired, meets Armstrong sin Madison Square Garden and, ‘even though he’s a 3-1 short- -ender, ‘he figures they might just as well ‘call the whole thing off and hand thim the title right now.

2 Henry May Sightsee

“Armstrong's talking already ‘about his fight in England in May ‘against Ernie Roderick,” Day, a tall ‘yeteran who'll be 27 in April, said today. “I don’t know whether Armstrong has booked passage to ;sail for England, but if he has he ‘had best plan only a sight- seeing | frip because he isn’t going to have any welterweight title to defend ‘over there. " “When Ross lost the title, I swore Td win it back for our stable. Bar‘ney knew how to beat Armstrong— keep crowding him and never back away—but he was pretty well washed up that night and couldn't stand the pace. I'm young and in ‘good condition and can do that very thing. “Armstrong's defended that title five times in around three months. Now that’s not an awful lot of fighting, particularly when half your opponents are only fair men. But ‘there’s always that pressure on the schamp—the thought that a guy, no ‘matter how bad he is, always can ‘connect with a lucky punch and ‘take the title.” . Armstrong, who also holds the lightweight crown, last saw action on March 16 in St. Louis where he defended both titles with a one:round knockout of Lew Feldman. ‘Before that, Henry had knocked out Bobby Pacho on March 4 in Ha--vana; outpointed Baby Arizmendi in Los Angeles, Jan. 10; kayoed Al Manfredo on Dec. 5 in Cleveland, rand outpointed Ceferino Garcia in a 15-rounder on Nov. 25 in New York. = Played Second Fiddle

Henry hasn't been defeated in 44 tarts and the last time he dropped one was back in 1936 out in St. ~Louis when he lost on a foul to one Tony Chavez. That winning streak “Includes 38 knockouts, 27 of which ‘were in succession. But Day, who couldnt get a ‘chance at big money and titles while “he was playing second fiddle to Ross dn the Art Winch-Sam Pian stable, hasn't been doing so badly himself these past couple of years. He’s won 15 straight and his last defeat was by Lou Ambers, former lightweight champion, in ga very close bout here. Day is a sharp right hand puncher and does his best work in close. He'll have a slight advantage in reach and, if he follows Ross’ advice to “keep Hoving ne it might turn out to be an Interesting evening—for everybody but Armstrong. : oy
