GARAGE REPAIR “CENTER CITED
| osche Points to ‘Saving In Reconditioning _ Of Fire Trucks.
City officials today were envision‘a huge municipal garage in Which all the City’s fire engines, police cruisers and trucks will be repaired or periodically rebuilt by a staff of experts. The first step to make that a reality was taken several years ago when the City built its Asphalt Plant on S. West St. Twenty acres
of land, reclaimed from White River, was acquired for such a com= bination garage and factory.

But from there on, it is still in a |
formative stage. The garage would | cost almost a million dollars to erect and equip, according to an estimate by Albert H. Losche, City Purchasing Agent. The City is not ready to spend that money yet.
: Use Four Repair Shops
Public rolling stock is now repaired at four City garages. Only the Fire Department, however, is rebuilding its equipment, making brand new apparatus from wornout stock, and thereby saving the taxpayers several thousands of dollars a year, according to Mr. Losche, For example, Rescue Truck 7, described as one of the finest pieces of apparatus of its kind, was built * from some obsolete equipment at the Fire Department . garage for $6500, according to Assistant Chief Frank Brown, repair expert. The purchase price on such a truck. is $14,000, Chief Brown said.
Fights for Toe
& Her own big toes peeping from her shoes, Mrs. Hazel M. Sheehan, president of the Business Women’s Democratic Club of Kansas City, Mo., is pictured as she mapped fight on a bill introduced in the State Legislature seeking to prohibit manufacture of toeless and heel-less shoes for women on ground they are injurious to health.
Last week, William O’Keefe, purchasing agent for the City of y
Kansas City, Mo., expressed admiration when he was shown how the Fire Department’s 1920-21 pumpers are being remodeled to match any new equipment on the market, Mr. Losche said.
Rebuild Trailers
Next door, in the sanitation garage, equipment is being made for garbage trailers which were purchased from Cincinnati and Cleveland last year for $40 apiece. Repainted and répaired, the trucks work as good as new when they cost $800. : In the Park Department Garage and the Municipal. Garage repair work on the City’s rolling stock is continuous, but only the Fire Department has ventured into the field of constructing its own equipment. “It would be a saving in the long run if we could centralize our repair work in a large garage where all the City’s rolling stock could be overhauled or rebuilt,” Mr. Losche said. ; “It would be a heavy investment, but :the work” we're doing on fire ‘equipment shows it would be an ultimate saving.” According to Public Administration reports, several Eastern cities are considering the same idea with the view of saving money in making replacements to their present motorized stock.
