" EXHUMATION OF 70 BEGINS TODAY
Of Member of Alleged : Money-Death Ring.
PHILADELPHIA, March 23 .(U.|.
P.).—Mass exhumation of some 70 bodies was to. start today following the startling revelation by Judge Harry S. McDevitt to a jury that had just recommended death in the electric chair for a member of an alleged murder-for-insurance syndicate, that “scores and scores of other - unfortunates were put to death by this group of assassins.” Herman Petrillo, 40-year-old . spaghetti salesman, ‘was hustled, snarling and ‘cursing, : from the courtroom: when Mrs. Margaret Skeen, jury foreman, announced in ' ‘a scarcely audible voice: “We find the defendant guilty of murder in ‘the first degree. We recommend death.”
Two More Arrested
Petrillo .was convicted specifically for the arsenic death of Ferdinand Alfonsi, one of three ‘men and a youth, all heavily insured, who were given arsenic by the syndicate, according ‘to the State. After the jury retired yesterday, Judge McDevitt ordered arrest of Paul Petrillo, 45, cousin of the defendant and alleged “wizard evil genius” of the ring who previously had been charged only with conspiracy, and Mrs. Susie Di Martino, gray-haired widow of one of the arsenic victims. Thanking the jury for their “services to the community,” Judge McDevitt said he wanted them to know that “the evidence produced here was only the scratching of the surface.” “I want you to know,” he said, “that scores and scores of other un- . fortunates were put to death by this group of assassins. It is only by such verdicts as you have reached that we ever will hope to break the back of this mad quest for money.
“Mean; Vicious Person”
“You see the type of person you have tried. You can see how diabol- . ical he is, what a mean, vicious person he is. You now realize that was the only verdict you could have returned.” Homicide squad members disclosed that exhumation of 70 bodies would be started today. The strange syndicate that purportedly mixed “black magic” with administration of arsenic to heavily insured victims has been operating unmolested for a- decade, according to authorities. Also in the courtroom and facing swift trial were Mrs. Corina Favato, widow and stepmother of two of the victims, and Mrs. Stella Alfonsi, widow of the man for whose death Petrillo was convicted.
Dozens of warrants were prepared for serving In a mass roundup of alleged ring members.

Commenting on the Supreme Court decision, Administrator Straus said: “The decision definitely removes all constitutional and legal obstacles from. the Indiana program. It clearly declares low-rent housing and slum clearance to be a public purpose and a benefit.” The Indiana decision brings to 13 the number of State tribunals which have upheld the validity of various provisions of public low-rent and slum clearance housing legislation, Mr. Straus said.
