STOCKS TUMBLE UNDER IMPETUS OFHEAVY TRADE

American, Foreign Dealers Dump Holdings on N. Y. Market.

NEW YORK, March 18 (U. P.).— Peans and Americans dumped stocks on the New York Stock Market today, forcing prices down 1 to 5 points to new lows since Jan. 28 in the most active trading of the year. Sell orders piled up before the opening and they were executed in blocks of 1000 to 6000 shares. Most European markets were closed in line with the usual Saturday procedure. Hence foreigners turned to the New York markets for their sales and houses’ with foreign connections reported sales on balance on what they termed “pessi‘mistic cables.” Bonds declined. Foreign currencies were irregular in dollar terms.

{EAT PRICES ' SETTLE BACK NEAR CLOSING

Favorable Report on Winter Grain Conditions Is : Deterrent.

CHICAGO, March 18 (U. P)— Wheat prices settled back around previous closing levels on the Chicago Board of Trade today, after showing early strength in sympathy with Winnipeg and Liverpool. At the close wheat was wun‘changed to off % cent, May 68; corn was off % to % cent, May 47%, and oats were unchanged to % cent higher, May 28%. : Favorable reports on winter wheat conditions and a reaction from early highs in the Canadian market induced buyers to sell out previous purchases. The European situation again caused considerable short covering. Liverpool closed 3% to 1% cents higher, Winnipeg gained under short covering and improved export

2 buying.

In the local market fair support from milling interests was noted in

i learly trading.

Crop reports from the Southwest were generally of a favorable nature. Scattered precipitation was reported and the forecast was for fair in Kansas and Nebraska and unsettled conditions in other southwest states. - Corn prices gained ground in sympathy with wheat after the opening, but turned downward under local and commission: house selling.

;|Poor export business continued a 2 depressing factor.

Soybean futures ruled firm, with the May and July deliveries reaching new seasonal highs under strong bids.

"GOOD MUSIC" By James Thrasher Apparently Erno Rapee’s tabloid dosage of grand opera, with which he began the current Radio City Music Hall season last fall, found a ready public. At any rate, Mr. Rapee is going to repeat the prescription in a “spring radio festival” at 11

“Lucia di Lammermoor” will be tomorrow’s offering. Others in the tabloid series are “La Boheme,” “Carmen,” Tales of Hoffman,” “Don Giovanni” and two Wagner distillations, “Siegfried” and “Die Walkuere.’ # Radio editors A well adopt Fred Allen’s despairing cry: “Why doesn’t somebody tell me these things?” Broadcasters forever are being forced to change scheduled programs and guest stars for one reason or another. And they seldom take the trouble to inform the newspapers’ radio departments. So last week this column and a lot of others informed you “Bidu Sayao, the Metropolitan soprano, would be soloist with the Detroit Symphony and Eugene Ormandy. Instead tuners-in discovered a very capable substitute for the indisposed diva in Walter Gieseking. Mr. Gieseking had been scheduled originally for tomorrow. And now that Miss Sayao is recovered, she will make her appearance in last weeks scheduled program at 8 p. m. tomorrow, CBS-WFBM. & 8 & Three of the six Metropolitan Opera auditions finalists will be heard at 4 p. m. tomorrow on NBC8 =

Blue. They are Margaret Carlisle, soprano, Elgin, Ill.; Robert Nichole son, baritone, Sydney, Australia, and Winifred Heidt, mezzo soprano, Detroit. ” ” a To the brave and scattered handful for whom music still takes precedence over the local basketball tournament and track meet, be it known that Bruno Walter will con-

duct the NBC Symphony Orchestra on NBC-Blue at 9 o'clock tonight. Mr. Walter's program will include the Overture to Weber's “Oberon”; the “Oxford” Symphony of Haydn, and Brahms’ C Minor Symphony, The Haydn work had its first performance when the composer was made an honorary doctor of music by Oxford University in 1791. “8 ®2 -8 Ave Rubinstein, the excellent Polish pianist who recently gave a recital in Cincinnati, will be soloist on tomorrow’s New York Philhare Ny Ibhony broadcast (2 p.m,, CBS-WFBM Mr. tein will be heard twice, in Saint-Saens Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, and in de Falla’s “Nights in the Gardens of Spain,” a rarely heard work subtitled “symphonic impressions for piano and orchestra.” 2 s 2

The New Friends of Music, have ing offered Bach’s ‘concertos for three and four pianos on recent

broadcasts, tomorrow will feature the same composer’s C major Concerto for two Janes, with Webster Aitken and Rurt Appelbaum as soloists. Fritz Stiedry will lead the orchestra in performance of two Haydn symphonies—NBC-Blue, § p. m. : ¥ 8

Which brings us to the “New Friends of Rhythm,” who will make their radio debut on tomorrow's “Magic Key.” The ensemble boasts four “long hairs” turned “hep cats”: In other words, four past and press ent members of the NBC Symphony who have joined up with a guitarist and bass player to form a “supersophisticated swing orchestra.” Beat it out, maestro!
