P. gubernatorial candidate, said here today : Speaking. before the Women’s Republican Club of Marion County Mr. Hillis said that®“confronted with the evidence the President calls the members of the Senate Committee on Military Affairs to his office, pledges them to secrecy and then makes his dreadful confession. “For an excuse he says it ‘will help the airplane business.’ Are we going to send our boys out to die just to help business?” He charged that because of ‘the Reciprocal Trade Treaty many workers were on WPA at the taxpayers expense. “We have a large steel mill in Kokomo which is affiliated with an equally large Indianapolis mill. I can produce a spool of wire of exactly the same quality and appearance made in Belgium: and sold less than a mile away from the Kokomo plant which is selling for 48 cents a spool less money than the Indiana product. “And the steel workers who should be busy in Kokomo and Indianapolis are out of jobs and digging ditches on the WPA. at your expense and at a net economical loss not only to himself and to you, but to the United States.
