SOUTH AMERICA ADMIRES U, S., FR. O'HARA SAYS

’ President of Notre Dame

Talks to Cathedral Men’s Club.

A growing interest in the United Bfates’ educational methods was oh-

® served in South America by the

Rev. Fr. John F. O'Hara, University of Notre Dame president, he

‘said in an address last night before

the Cathedral Men’s Club.

Father O'Hara, who recently returned to the United States after serving as a delegate to the Eighth International Conference of American States at Lima, Peru, last December, remained in South America a month after the close of the con-

3 ference.

He told his audience that he found the only reason thére are not more South American students attending schools in the United States

Is the disadvantageous position of}.

South American currency. More Study English

“Where 20 years ago they came by. the hundreds, now they come by the tens—and there are not many tens,” he said. “If anything,

» there is an increased desire on the . part of South American parents to

send their children, especially the

. boys, to the United States for an

education. . “The study of English is far more general than it was 20 or 30 years ago. There is an earnest plea for the establishment by American religious orders of schools in which an American program of studies will be taught in English. “Lima and Rio de Janeiro have such schools—for girls. In Lima, the Marist Brothers plan to open a school for boys this year. They are welcomed by the ecclesiastical authorities, by the civil rules and by the Catholic parents.

Pays Tribute to Hull

“There were urgent pleas for scholarships, and the suggestion was offered that a fund be set up by some foundation, that would equalize the exchange disadvantage.” Father O'Hara paid high tribute to the role of Secretary of State Hull in the Pan American gontererice. “The American nation owes a debt of thanks to Secretary Hull for]. the kindness and patience which marked his direction of the American participation in the conference,” he said. “Many Latin-American statesmen have remarked to me that the personal influence of Secretary Hull, more than any other factor, is re-

, sponsible for the candor, the kind-

ness, and the dispatch which have marked the proceedings of these Inter-American conferences.”
