TIES SPREAD AS AUTOS GAIN, OIL MEN TOLD
Downtown Values Cut as Result, Petroleum News Editor Says.
The automobile is “flattening out” cities by sending business to outlying sections and depreciating the value of downtown buildings, members of the Indiana Independent Petroleum Association were told today at their spring convention in the Hotel Severin. Warren C. Platt, Cleveland, editor ‘of the National Petroleum News, told the group that the auto makes it easier to drive to a business office
in the outlying sections than to
walk to a store downtown. For this reason, he said, more and more downtown buildings are being razed, to avoid taxes, and ‘the sites are being converted into auto parking lots and gasoline stations. The oil industry ha$ been eriticized for having too many stations, causing extra distribution costs, but at the same time it has helped the unemployment problem, he said. “Thousands of jobless men, including even professional men,” he said, “have been able to keep off of WPA by operating filling stations.” The oil industry has been extremely fortunate throughout the depression years, he declared.
100 Register for Sessions
“In only one year since 1929 has it failed to sell more of its products than were: sold in the previous year. Last year, the increase was only 4 per cent, but this year, it looks like a gain of from 4 to 6 per cent.” - The group also was addressed by Louis D. Young, national advertising manager of The Indianapolis Times, who discussed results of the Nation-wide Home Inventory conducted by The Times and other Scripps-Howard newspapers recently, Mr. Young told the group the inventory revealed that a large proportion of Indianapolis residents own their own homes, and that twothirds of them live in single houses, indicating they are of; the nontransient type and pu they buy from habit rather than impulse. More than 100 were! registered for the convention which will close tomorrow. A stag. banquet and entertainment, followed by a floor show was scheduled for tonight. Speakers at a luncheon tomorrow are to include H. H. Linsmith, Indianapolis, General Outdoor Advertising Co.; E. J. Gallmeyer, Ft. Wayne, Wayne Pump Co. and George Biggs, of the Continental Oil Co., Ponca, Okla. C. W. Huber, Crown Point, association president, presided at today’s session.
