Culver Film | Greeted by Drum Corps
Indiana Military Academy 1 Is Centerpiece of Circle Movie.
Patriotism with the Hollywood touch played across the screen at
- the Circle Theater last night at the
special premiere of “Spirit of Culver.” Uniformed drum and bugle corps atided to the colorful opening of the picture which stars Freddie Bar-| tholomew. Life at Culver Military Academy plus a closeup of the Indiana World War Memorial brought out a display by. the American Legion and Auxiliary corps preceding the performance. The picture shows (in a rather unrealistic way) the transformation of a boy of the roads with unpatriotic ideas into the’ ideal cadet at the noted Indiana academy. Indianapolis was “plugged” graciously throughout the picture. Much of the local setting of course was unrecognizable but the last scene shows the World War Memorjal—the “real McCoy’ — which brought a buzz of approval from the audience. ‘*%> Cooper Steals the Show
Jackie Cooper, “who steals much of Bartholomew's glory in the picture, goes to Culver Military Academy on a Legion scholarship from Indianapolis after he is dragged from a soup line by Andy Devine. Jackie tells Tubby, the breadline dispenser, that he doesn’t care much about being a “tin soldier” since the War deprived him of a father. The Congressional Medal which was given his father for service in
a field medical station means little
to the boy. The action from then on is concerned with proving its patriotic value to the lad. : . The youngster goes to Culver where he is considered a “heel” by his classmates because of his feelings. The cadets teach him the Culver spirit of being a “regular guy” at the same time leading him into more patriotic-minded channels.
Reminiscent of ‘Tom Browy’
Henry Hull as the supposedly dead father and hero turns up at the. Veterans Hospital in Indian= apolis—shellshocked and a deserter from the Army. Tom finally finds out that the disabled veteran is his father and
- leaves school to fight the world
with his dad. Freddss and another classmate and Andy Devine, also
on their trail, overtake the two at
Plymouth. Devine produces a letter from the War Department
. squaring everything for the father.
)
The final fadeout shows the cadets drilling at the War Memorial. The picture is reminiscent of “Tom Brown at Culver.” Quite in the spirit of last night's occasion were a number of Culver sweaters in The audience.

News Guild's Production | Is Billed for March 18-19. |
The Indianapolis Newspaper Guild will revive “The Front Page,” Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur's lusty comedy of journalism, on March 18 and 19 at the Civic Theater. There will be night performances on Saturday and Sunday, and a Sunday matinee. Osgood Perkins and Lee Tracy were featured in the play’s Broadway run, which began in 1928. On the screen, the principal parts of
_. Walter Burns and Hildy Johnson
were taken by Adolphe Menjou and Pat O’Brien. These parts will be taken in the forthcoming Guild production by Hal Hawkes and E. M. Miller Jr. Lawrence Hill is directing the production, and other players in the cast include Sol Blumenthal, Joe Lomuto, Eugene McManamon, John Wolf, Robert Moffett, Gladys Moffett, Harry Morrison, Arthur Zinken Jr., Catherine Monahan, Gordon, Eloise Cook, Alma Meyers, William Cook, James Commons, Catherine Dalsheimer, Harold Fromer, C, James McLemore and Paul Rouse. The show's producers wish it known that patrons will see the original play, without the film production deletions.
STONE IS INVESTOR
Lewis Stone is financially interested in a new firm that soon will put on the market transparent cellophane containers for canned fruits and vegetables.
MORE LIVESTOCK
Clark Gable is adding to the livestock at his new Encino ranch. Andy Devine gave him four chickens as a starter. This week Gable is buying 1200 more.

EW YORK, March 10.—Her new show, “The Little Foxes,” is a success and Tallulah Bankhes d is skyhigh In happiness. “It's too mahvelous, darling,’ said the turbulent Tallulah, curling up on the couch in her star’s dressing room, the happiest woman in the world. This is THE play at last. What, dahling? TI love everything about it—the play—my part—Herman (Herman
it’s wonderful. I'm ‘excited. I'm
who went from Broadway where she didn’t make much of a stir to London, where she did, and thence to Hollywood which she'd rather forget, and back to Broadway whete she now reigns as the stage’s most glamorous lady. Marriage, a ro-
mantic climax to the whirlwind courtship of Emery, hasn’t subdued her. She is as violent in her happi-
‘ness as she was in her melangholy.
Her conversation is cyclonic. Her devotion to her father, the Speaker of the House, is idolatrous. The last time I called upon Tallulah happened to be the birthday of her mother, Eugenia Sledge, a famed beauty of the South who died when Tallulah was an infant. I joined Tallulah in a champagne toast to the sentimental occasion. ‘Then some visitors came and the champagne corks popped, the toast was repeated often. That's Tallulah.
