Students at Pittsburgh Call Strike
Protest Alleged ‘Bungling’ Resulting in Resignation Of Sutherland.
PITTSBURGH, March 10 (U. P.). —University of Pittsburgh students today staged a one-day revolt against administration “bungling” that forced the resignation of Football Coach John B. (Jock) Suther=land, and hundreds of students quit their classes. As the demonstration began after the first hour of classes, strike leaders harangued the undergraduates to leave their classes in the skyscraper university building. Strike leaders paraded through Oakland, where the university is located, and held “funeral services” over the “corpse of Pitt football” at the cathedral of learning. Chancellor John G. Bowman, whose policy of de-emphasizing football and administration of other athletic policies that prompted Sutherland to resign after 15 years at Pitt, was in New Brunswick, N. J., today to address a Rutgers Univer-
in New York. The demonstration was arranged by = secret strike committee, which claimed the walkout was not only an expression of resentment against Sutherland’s departure but also to
short-sighted administration.”
