JANT TO FACE GIANT IN SUT
FOR $100,000,
Authors ‘Seek to Demonstrate Contrasts Between Wadlow and Exhibit.
ST. JOSEPH, Mo., March 9 (U. P.).--Two men who see the world as Jonathan Swift's . Gulliver saw “Lilliputia” may face each other in _ court today, one to claim full nor-
.malcy of body and mind, the other | to challenge those claims.
They are two of the world's tallest men: Robert Wadlow, who at 21 is 8 feet, 8 inches tall and still growing, and Texas Jack Earle, circus giant who can walk erect under his outstretched arm. For three days, Wadlow, his personal physician and a number of his friends had described as dam4 aging an article written by Dr. Charles Humberd which said he was “apathetic, surly and unfriendly” toward his fellow man. He demands $100,000 for alleged libel.
Contrast to Be Shown
As its trump card, the defense planned to bring Earle into court today, draw a contrast between the two and declare that while Earle is normal, Wadlow is the victim of an abnormal growth at the base of the pituitary gland which influences his personality and growth. This defense claim was made in a deposition signed by several noted brain surgeons and authorities on giantism. To strengthen it the defense will point to the contrast in Earle’s and Wadlow’s gait and to an alleged contrast in their demeanor. Both trooped with the Barnum & Bailey
circus, Wadlaw as a center ring, bigtop attraction, Earle as a sideshow
“freak.” Earle came to this western Missouri town yesterday but citizens who| had been fortunate enough to jam| their way into the crowded court sessions gave him only passing notice. He is 7 foot 6 inches tall and walks with an easy grace, known in the realm of giantism as motor co-ordination. Wadlow walks with a cane.
Sues Magazine Also
Dr. Hemberd’s article was published in the American Medical Association Journal. In their deposition, his colleagues claimed that whatever statements and conclusions it drew concerning Wadlow - was intended for the consumption of the medical profession and not for the public. It was an article|™ written in the interest of science, they stated. Wadlow, whose school teachers and parents testified he was a “friendly. normal boy in every way,” also Mad a suit pending against the Journal.
His unusual size has attracted
hundreds of curious at each court session. Most of them were obliged to stand in the street before the Court House.

LINKS HEART ILLS AND | TOO ACTIVE GANGLION
ATLANTA, Ga, March 9 (U. P.). —Qperations to relieve overactivity of the Celaic ganglion, or ‘“abdominal brain” today had been prescribed ‘by Dr. George Crile, Cleveland physician, as “the answer to the colossal problem of heart disease in the United States.” Overactivity of the ganglion, a mass of nerve fibers lying just below the breast bone, is largely the cause of high blood pressure, hardening ot the arteries, angina pectoris and other heart ailments, Dr. Crile told delegates to the Southeastern Surgical Congress. He said operations to cut many of
the fibers to “break the electrical ‘stimulus” served to slow down the ganglion’s activity.
