3 Theater Attractions On Horizon
Newest Comell Offering, Clare Boothe Skit,
Drama Coming.
‘By JAMES THRASHER
The recent. visits of ‘theatrical press agents to this - department have been like the sight of rain clouds to a dust bowl farmer. For they mean that an end of English’s dramatic drought is in sight.
When Ethel Barrymore “Whiteoaks” departed
and
horizon for parched playgoers until April, when Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne were due for a visit. But now the schedule for late March is crowded with three attractions. . Such is the unpredictability of our theatrical climate. First of all, we are to see “Kiss the Boys Goodbye” for three days beginning March 23. Then, on March 28, there comes a two-day engagement of “Susan’and God.”
Premiere Is Listed - An event of special importance is listed for the following evening. That is the scheduled first performance anywhere of “No Time for Comedy.” - Under ordinary circumstances, this might be called a tryout. But since the play's star is Katharine Cornell, the designation of “world premiere” seems not too pretentious. “No Time for Comedy’, will be here for three nights and a Saturday matinee. The earlier attractions will have Saturday and .. Wednesday matinees, respectively. As any reader of the theatrical pages knows, “Kiss the s Goodbye” is Clare Boothe’s sovat comedy, and a proof that the vitriolic playwright is an impartial satirist. Having clawed “The Women” to bits, Miss Boothe here has gone after the masculine gender. Her heroine is one Cindy Lou Bethany, a crinolined Southern miss who is chosen by Producer Lloyd Lloyd to play the part of Velvet O'Toole in a certain _much-discussed photoplay. trons See Likenesses
In spite of Miss Boothe’s denial]: of “any similarity to actual persons, living or dead,” in her play, patrons have {insisted upon identifying not only the producer and heroine, but the play's “radical columnist,” newspaper owner, wealthy playboy, and others. So Miss Boothe recently drew a neat red herring across the path in her introduction to the comedy’s published version. She insisted that “Kiss the Boys Goodbye” was actually intended as anti-Fascist propaganda. So now. no one believes that —or anything else. “Susan and God” also has its light and satirical moments, though essentially the Rachel Crothers drama is much more serious in character. Apparently Miss Crothers has not taken any pains to deny that the vehicle of Susan’s conversion was the “Oxford movement.” Her dramatic thesis deals with the efforts of a wife and mother to reconcile her new-found creed with existing circumstances. Little information on “No Time for. Comedy” is available as yet. It boasts, besides Miss Cornell’s presence, the added recommendations of S. N. Behrman’s authorship, Guthrie McClintic’s direction, and the presence in the cast of Laurence Olivier and Margalo Gilmore, among others.
OHIO TO PRESENT ACADEMY WINNER
“You Can't Take It With You,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “and Academy - Award-winning movie, will open a three-day engagement at the Ohio Theater Sunday. Lionel Barrymore, Jean Arthur, James Stewart, Edward Arnold and Mischa Auer are featured. The accompanying picture will be “Youth Takes a Fling.”
'MIKADO' IS DUE AT ‘DANVILLE HIGH
Gilbert and Sullivan’s Mikado” will be presented by the music department of Danville High Scheol at 8 p. m. Friday in the school auditorium. Miss Florence Ellis, vocal music instructor, will conduct.

tary academy.” Apparently this is the first time that the World War Memorial has assumed its place in a dramatic production. But Culver is an old stamping ground for dramatized and fictionized deeds of bravery, excitement and “spirit.” “Spirit of Culver,” which features Jackie Cooper and Freddie Bartholomew, was not filmed at the academy. However, Brig. Gen. L. R. Gignilliat, Culver superintendent; went to Hollywood to act as the film’s technical supervisor.
