Collection of Delinquent Levies, However, Off _ From Year Ago.

NEW YORK, March 7 (U. P).—

The average city in the United

States in 1938 collected a slightly higher percentage of its current property tax levy than in 1937, marking the fifth successive year-to-year improvement, Dun & Bradstreet, Inc. reported today. The report disclosed, however, that collections of delinquent taxes declined sharply, with the result that total collections of current and

. delinquent taxes fell below the . year’s levy, on the average, for the Int P&P

first time in four years. . Average current tax delinquency for ‘150 large cities in 1938 was 10.7 per cent, compared with 11.3 per

~ cent in 1937 and a record delin-

quency of 26.3 per cent in 1933. The average collection—current

: and delinquent—amounted to only|Loew

99.8 per cent of the year’s tax bill, compared with a collection equivalent to 102.8 per cent of the total

; levy in 1937.

“The trend of combined current

. and delinquent tax collections in 1938,” the report observed, “is an

indication of a return to close to normal municipal revenue conditions, except in a minority of cities where, special problems still prevail.”

TRADING LIGHT; PRICES STEADY

Dealers ‘Hesitate to Take Position on Either Side Of Market.

CHICAGO, March 17 (w. P.)— Wheat ‘prices held near previous

closing levels in light trading on the

Chicago Board of Trade today. At the end of the first hour wheat was unchanged to off % cent, corn off % to 4 cent, and oats unchanged to 1% cent lower. | Reports from the Argentine that congestion of wheat at terminals and elevators might force the Government to suspend acceptance of deliveries attracted considerable interest as to what the probable effect would be on the export szles policy. Local traders hesitated to take a position on: either side of the market. A forecast of unsettled weather in the winter wheat belt was responsible for light selling, There was demand for July wheat at 68% cents, Liverpool wheat closed 3% cent

easier most of the session. The March contract was independently firm abroad due to small tenders. Pressure of. Manitoba wheat and slow milling demand were depressing otherwise. Winnipeg wheat was about steady. Export business in North American wheat remained slow. The weather map showed little precipitation in the Southwest, but forecast rain or snow for most of the grain belt. Corn prices were easier under scattered local and commission house selling. Buenos Aires was off 1,-to 7% tent at noon, and Liverpool reported slow demand. It was reported that a few parcels of corn were sold for export overnight. Local receipts were estimated at 39 cars.

The rate last week was the best since Dec. 12 last year when operations were at 57.6 per cent. The rate a month ago was 53.4 per cent and a year ago 29.9 per cerit. The slight dip was about in iine but vas Sis) pointing nevertheless. observers reported, was lie to operate this week slightly below last week's rate, while a moderate increase was in prospect for the Chicago sector, Most quarters believe that operations will record encouraging improvement the balance of this month, partly in reflection of the good railway orders booked recently.
