There was no star performer—no Seabiscuit, Stagehand, Discovery or Equipoise—to rule a popular choice. Considering the $100,000 as bait, the Western classic has drawn an outstandingly Nack-luster field.

Fast Track Expected

Only seven of the 31 top-weighted nominees are likely to answer the bugle. Track officials look for 12 definite starters, with five more, perhaps, if the oval comes up slow or muddy. Despite earlier predictions, the chance of rain appeared remote. There was no denying a i [beaming sun. The outlook was for a field of 15, and a fast track. The public split into three camps. Some citizens prefer Townsend Martin’s Cravat, Nelson Howard's Gosum, Neil McCarthy’s Today, or Mrs. Parker Corning’s Thanksgiving.
