i: By JAMES THRASHER It's a dull and unusual week when somebody doesn’t remark: “Pretty soft for you—nothing to do

but go around and see shows all ay.”

Business, as

d They might add: “You must meet such interesting people—especially in Hollywood's version of the newspaper business.” All of which brings us around to the week’s new shows. No less than four of them are concerned with the heroic and glamorous exploits of cinema reporters. The Circle, which starts its new week today, presents Michael Whalen in “Inside Story.” as an added attraction to “Wife, Husband and Friend.”

The Indiana’s “Cafe Society,”

which opens tomorrow, brings us:

Fred MacMurray as a .ship reporter who marries into New York's circle of night club nabobs. And at the Apollo we are to have again the adventures of two news gatherers (male and female) in pursuit of love and riches, as set forth in “It Happened One Night” and “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town.”

Not an Heiress in Sight

Unfortunately, my journalistic experience never. has included acquaintance with a colleague who set out to get a story and wound up with an heiress as a wife.” And I have yet to meet a young man on the police beat who neatly solves murder mysteries on the company’s time while Chief Morrissey and his gendarmes stand about in baffled Selection, in fact, most of the reporters I know don’t dictate headlines over the phone or leave their hats on in :the office. They have the unromantic habit of being home bodies of steady habits and regular working hours who have spent more time in writing “routine” than in mulling over scoops and sensations in the corner groggery. gis Yet all these things I've missed, and more, await the local movie fan in current attractions. Once again you will see Clark Gable win both the story and; Miss Claudette Colbert in “It Happened One Night.” Mr. Deeds, as played by

Gary Cooper, will recover from his|,

belated discovery that Jean Arthur, the girl of his ‘dreams, is just one of those nosey sob-sisters. And Miss Arthur will be happily united with the tuba-playing philosopher and his 20-million-dollar fortune. " Mr. MacMurray will subdue the pampered debutante, Madeleine Carroll, by hydrotherapy (he throws her in the bathtub) and save his ‘romance {rom ‘the insidious machinations of a gossip columnist. And Mr. Whalen will celebrate his promotion from reporter to columnist

Circle “WIFE, HUSBAND AND FRIEND”~—Loretta Young, Warner Baxter, Binnie Barnes, Cesar Romero. ' Dirscted by Gregory Ratoff; adapted by Nunnaly Johnson from a novel by James M. Cain. : In the course of persuading his ambitious wife that she can’t sing, husband discovers that he has a great voice himself. This does not make for domestic felicity, especially when the husband goes touring with an attractive soprano. It takes a bad case of stage fright in his operatic debut to cure the husband, pacify the wife and return the family to a

nonmusical basis. ; . «INSIDE STORY”—Michael Whalen, Jean Rogers, Chick Chandler.

Entertainment De Luxe Newspaper reporting a la Hollywood is your best entertainment. In contrast, the Circle’s “Wife, Husband and Friend” promises us a debunking of the American concert singer, who, next to the American journalist, probably is our most glamorous national breadwinner. Among the film’s tempting offerings is the sight of Warner Baxter making - his debut in “Il Trovatore,” a music drama which seems to be a favorite vehicle for burlesque. You'll remember the Marx Brothers played some hilarious tricks with it in “A Night at the Opera.” All of which 1leaves us with

Loew’s dual of “Topper Takes a Trip” and “Dramatic School.” The former film brings back the appearing and disappearing Kerbys, who departed this life in “Topper,” and who now return to bedevil once more the meek and well-meaning Cosmo Topper.
