Ls ado ~ INDICTS MANTON BL JUDICIAL QUIZ
~ Former Judge and IW arands Man Both Charged With Conspiracy:
-* NEW YORK, March 2 (U. P.)~ Martin T. Manton, resigned senior judge of the Second U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals, sanad rge M Spector, an insurance man, were indicted by a Federal Grand Jury today on charges of copspiracy to defraud the U. 8. Government. : The indictment, first to) be returned by the special Grand Jury which has been investigating the Federal judiciary in this area since Manton’s resignation under fire early ‘last month, was handed to
Judge John C. Knox when the jury} -
convened ‘for today’s session. It accuses the men on three conspiracy. counts and one substantive count, ard was based on charges shade by District Attorney Thomas E. Dewey in a letter Jan. 29 to Chairman Hatton W. Sumners, of the House Judiciary Committee in Washington, in connection with litigation in which the Schick Dry Shaver Co. was involved.
Murphy’s Aid There
" The indictment was handed to Judge Knox in the presence of John _T. Cahill, who was placed in charge of the judiciary investigation by Attorney General Murphy. In his letter Mr. Dewey charged that Spector, interested in a concern which was appealing from a District Court decision against i and for the Schick company, “gave or lent corporations wholly owned or controlled by Judge Manton,” or to Mantén himself, a total of $¥7,000. Manton’s court, Mr. Dewey said, reversed the District Coutt’s ruling against Dictograph Products Corp., Inc., the company in whose service
Spector dllegedly ‘was engaged, and g
ruled in its favor. . The suit, according to the Dewey letter, involved a basic patent for electric razors and was originally brotight by the Schick eomipany. The Dictograph company, makers of the Packard razor, was controlled at the time, 1936-37, by the late Archie M. Andrews, Mr. Dewey said,
and Spector was Andrews’ “associ- |
ate and confidential agent.” Mr. Dewey's letter contained five other similar charges against Mantori, who announced his resignation the next day. President Roosevelt aceepted it effective Feb. 7.

BENDIX EMPLOYEES ARE BACK AT WORK
Negotiations to Settle Dispute to Continue.
SOUTH BEND, March 2 (U. PJ). —Employees of the aircraft division of the Bendix Corp. returned to work today after. having been on strike since last Monday in a dispute with the company over a wage adjustment. Negotiations have been in progress since the strike to effect a settlement, but none has been reached as yet, it was said. Striking members of the United Automobile Workers Union at a meeting last night decided to return to work today. Meetings between the management and union representatives will continue. ; The strikers, reported to be about 400 in number, staged a “sit-down” Monday for five hours but left the
plant quietly when informed of a Supreme Court decision that day which in effect made sit-down strikes illegal.
