tions and Spain is the real battle‘ground. Since Europe’s “big four” avoided war by meeting at Munich five months ago, the pattern of peace has become a helter-skelter race in which the democratic partnership

+ with indirect support from America, has sought to delay further international readjustment until it could build up its armaments to equality with the dictatorial front formed by Germany, Italy and Japan., .

_ Thus, in correlating and clarifying _ the day-by-day headlines of European conflict, it must be remembered that time is on the side of’ democracies because of their superior resources. It must be remembered that the sore spots suddenly breaking out around the Mediterranean are not the result of spontaneous combustion but are part of a pattern designed long ago; that the dictators are now speeding

~ the weaving of that design.

One of those sore spots is the sun-baked Red Sea port of Djibouti, owned by France, coveted by Italy.

Another is the frontier between

“which many experts believe will be the scene for the opening act of the _ next war. : Tug-of-War in Spain - But far the most important because of the accident of geography is Spain. There Britain and France are now making a desperate and belated bid to offset the strategic foothold which Italy and Germany have gained by active support of the ; triumphant Franco army. he highly doubtful outcome of that tug-of-war for influence in the future Spain will go far toward deciding dominance in the Mediterranean . and, in 1arn, toward peace or war in Europe. The importance of the Mediter-

ranean lies in the fact that it is a communications line essential to

His dream was one of the most effective factors in keeping up Fascist morale and maintaining the Italihn dictatorship , by directing the aim of the people toward ne ‘glories.

Hitler Gives a Hand

It was only after Fuehrer Hitler t into power in Germany that » it/became more than a dream. Here was a ruler who, like Sig. Mussolini, * wanted something and was willing to take chances to get it. The two got together in what they called the Rome-Berlin axis—meaning they would help each other as long as it was individually profitable. Obviously, a direct attack on

British sea power was not profitable. Instead, Sig. Mussolini began

Before the end of the war, both boasted of .this support and threatened France—where the Socialist Government had crumbled— for aiding the Loyalists, Now, suddenly, the broad pattern of events began to take form; the design emerged. up to Munich and with the aid of Sig. Mussolini, reversed an unfavorable balance of power: in Central Europe. Immediately afterward Premier Mussolini began drawing the strings together in the Mediterranean.

He acted first to weaken traditional British suppor: for France by a friendship treaty, long in abeyance, designed to assure London that Italy did not aim—for the present at least—at British interests. He opened a campaign of abuse against France. He threw fascism’s strength into the Spanish war to speed a victory for Franco while the time was ripe and he made it clear that Italian armed forces and the powerful Italian aerial and naval bases in Spain would remain until “complete victory” had been achieved. : : Thus, the Italian Premier used &

France, now encircled on three sides by dictatorial states, and Britain, which above all desires to prevent permanent Italian ‘and: German submarine bases in Spanish waters. At the same time, Fremier Mussolini opened up egitation for French territory in the Mediterranean backed by extensive military preparations in the hope that such threat of war would result in British pressure on France to grant Italy concessions at Djibouti, the gateway to Ethiopia; in Suez Canal administration; in rights for the 95,000 Italian residents of Tunisia. “Against these moves, Britain and Prance have armed in haste and presented a united front. They are still trying to use their vast financial resources, which the new Spain badly needs, to keep Spain out of the Fascist bloc. If they fail, their struggle against the dictatorships will not be lost but it will be immeasurably harder.

Anticipating an increase in air travel as result of both the New York and San Francisco World Fairs, Transcontinental & Western Air, Inc, announced today it will step up plane schedules in all parts of the country, effective tomorrow.

W. R. Bunker, Indiznapolis district traffic manager for T. W. A, said the number of passenger flights between Chicago.and New York will be nearly doubled. Schedules through Indianapolis will be rearranged, he said, for faster connections with other large cities.
