Push Roadside Beauty Work, 3 Groups Urge

Three Indiana women’s organizations today called on the Legislature to kill any pending legislation that would “impair or disrupt” the State Highway Department’s roadside scenic improvement program. In resolutions adopted and transmitted to members of both houses, their roads committees and the Governor, the three groups condemned what they termed “attacks on the roadside project by selfish prejudiced interests.” The organizations are the Garden Club of Indiana, American Association of University Women and the Indiana Federation of Clubs.

Aimed at House Bill

Mrs. Walter P. Morton, president of the Garden group, declared the resolutions were aimed at a House bill now pending before the Senate Roads Committee which would distribute an estimated additional four million dollars of gasoline tax funds to ‘local units, cutting the State's share. The measure, which passed the House after considerable debate, specifically provides $2,500,000 in gas tax funds annually shall be distributed to cities and towns, with the money remaining to be divided half to the State and half to the counties. Mrs, Morton said the organizations were opposed to any bill which would reduce the Highway Departmept’s share of gds tax funds because the department’s roadside program would be crippled. No date has been set for consideration of the measure by the Senate committee.
