Racing Star

Ciencia, a Saucy Miss, Upsets Dope by Taking First In Santa Anita Derby.

ARCADIA, Cal., Feb. 23 (U. P.).— The eldest maxim in racing went into the ash can today as the West

acclaimed Ciencia, -tne saucy little Miss who carried the lie to the legend that fillies can’t win in the spring and frolicked to a walkaway triumph in the $50,000 Santa Anita Derby. The Texas-bred, Texas-owned youngster — smallest contender in the 14-horse race—not only won, but won in such stunning fashion that around the bats and the stables today they were calling her the Stagehand of 1939. Far off the pace in the early going, Ciencia was forced to fly for her victory and she did. The nearest rival was Mrs. Bessie Franzheim’s Xalapa Clown, five lengths behind, with Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt's Impound nosing Porter’s Mite for third. Over Fast Track

A holiday throng of 47,500 watched the - daughter of Cohort-Science step off the mile and a furlong on a fast track under clear skies in 1:50 3-5, just a fifth of a second off Stagehand’s winning ‘mark a year ago, and boost her earnings for two years of campaigning to $53,630. Ciencia went to the post at 8-1 while the customers made a favorite of Porter’s Mite. She broke from the seventh post position along with the field but Jockey Carroll Bierman held her off while Norman Church’s Sweet Nancy and the Circle M. Ranch’s Shining One went out in front. At the quarter pole it was Xalapa Clown in the lead with Mrs. Frank Carreaud’s Time Alone running second, two and a half. lengths behind. Sweet Nancy was third. Ciencia was 13th, more than 11 lengths from the pace, but still Bierman kept a tight grip on her

She Turns It On

Ciencia was running ninth at the half mile mark and now Bierman let loose on the reins. The filly responded with a rush and in two more furlongs she was third, two and a half lengths away from the pace setting Clown. Porter’'s Mite held second. Around ‘he home stretch turn it was Ciencia and Xalapa Clown head and head, but once the long strip of straightaway was reached the race was over. Jockey Bierman leaned back and tapped his mount twice with the whip. Ciencia put daylight between her and the field at every post. She widened the gap to a length, to two lengths and finally passed the wire the longest winner in the brief history of the Washington birthday {eature—five lengths.

Tony Hinkle, ‘Butler basketball coach, was still in bed yesterday with the flu, but his 1939 Indiana College Conference champs went through a spirited drill under the eye of Earl (Overman, assistant coach. The Bulldogs will attempt to keep clean their unblemished loop record of eight victories, tomorrow night, when Wabash College invades the Fieldhouse at 8:15 p. m. for Butler’s loop final. Very well does the Blue and White five recall its last engagement with the Cavemen at Crawfordsville two weeks ago. The game went into a double overtime before Butler eked out a 27 to 25 decision. The regulars were dismissed early yesterday afternoon and Assistant Coach Overman sent the reserves through a scrimmage session against the freshman team. With Jerry Steiner back following recovery from a sprained ankle, Overman feels that all will be complete for tomorrow night when Hinkle is expected to be back at his ‘regular duties.
