REFORM BEGIN IN DIES GROUP'S
HEARING PoLicY 8
Former FBI Man Engaged
To Investigate for Committee.
~ By THOMAS L. STOKES : Times Special Writer WASHINGTON, Feb. 22 (U.P). =—The Dies Committee is quietly progressing with preparations. for a new and elaborate investigation of un-American activities with the $100,000 which ifs tall Texas chair-
man, Martin Dies, got: recently from
the House,
It has employed as its counsel
Rhea Whitley, for 10 years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and
more recently a practicing ghiorney
here. ‘It is hiring & corps of vestigators to comb a mass of bh cumulated data touching on Cam-
munist, Fascist and Nazi activities. |:
The charges that its previous inquiry was loose and irres ible, and that its chairman was intent on prosecuting labor and public officials sympathetic with hor, seem to have had their effect. The Committee, -it was learned today, plans to conduct its investiation secretly for some time and oes not contemplate any public hearings for several months, probably not until after the present session of Congress ends. The abject, it was said, is to inquire carefully into the caliber of witnesses and the suthenticity of evidence before beginning to ot in public
hearings. Secrecy Ordered
The Committee has surrounded its operations with secrecy. It passed a resolution a few days ago ‘losing the lips of every member and every
employee, except by specific auhiaytion of the Committee itself. There seems to have been a leak,
however, to the weekly organ ‘of thel"
so-called Silver Shirts, called “Liberation,” which has been attempting to ridicyle the Committee. The most recent issue of the publication
of this allegedly Fascist organiza-|
tion says: “The revitalized Dies Committee held its first executive session on Feb. 10 and interviewed—confidentially—some 40 applicants for positions as investigators in the new Seip. » This aroused some Committee members.
“Yoorhis Scared Few” It went on to say: “Jerry Voorhis: sat in on the aforesaid executive session and made extensive notes on each man and
woman questioned. He glared ab
each and scared ‘ell out of quite a few.” Rep. Voorhis (D. Cal), a New
' Dealer, recently was named to a
Committee vacancy by Speaker Bankhead, in an obvious attempt $0 have an Administration check en the Committee. In its current issue, Liberat advertises for sale at 15 cen copy and $10 per 1000 the speech. de livered in the House by Rep. J.|J Parnell Thomas (R. N.'d.), g Dies Committee member, asking imeachment or Lahor Secretary erkins. : Rep. Joe. Starnes ¢D. Ala), a Committee member, said there was nothing particularly secret about the Committee interviewing prospective investigators, as they were lined up in the public hall outside the committee room. If is customary. for investigating committees engaged in this sort of inquiry to keep the identity of its investigators secret. “We've heen pufting every wouldke investigator under the spotlight,” Rep. Starnes said. “We have mide a very careful scrutiny. We're going to give the country a real investigation of every un-American activity.”
Make Link With Murphy
He and other members of the committee said that persons who had been accused in previous testimony would be given opportunity to appear jn public session, if they requested, to answer “allegations against them. The committee has a liaison with Attorney General Murphy in Rep. John J. Dempsey (D. N. M.). Mr. Dempsey says he was promised the Justice Department's co-operation, including, if necessary the loan of lawygrs and investigators. .» Mr, Dempsey said today he would. not permit the ry to be used Bereafior asa poli or agency. The Commitiee-is marking time temporarily until the return of its chaipman, who is recuperating from an appendectomy.
