HIGHER IN DULL TRADING TODAY

Share Market Up to More 2

Than Point; Averages High Since Jan. 21.

NEW YORK, Feb. 18 (U.P).— [ah

Stocks crept higher in dull deal- |4 ings today. Railroad issues led bonds higher. Commodities were mixed, with a majority slightly higher.

Abbott Lab .... 58% Abbott Lab pt 125 Adams Exp . 9% Air Reduc . 50%

The share market was carried up Am

fractions to more than a point and

the small gains were sufficient to A

carry the averages to around the best levels since Jan. 21.

‘Lack of selling pressure was in-

duced by President Roosevelt's state- [a

Jent that business had nothing to the Administration planned no

further Federally financed ventures A

into electric power projects. Many traders were absent from the street, which accounted partly . for the market's lethargy. Much of the business originated on the floor, but there was little desire to build up commitments that would have to be kept over the week-end. Steel shares featured from the opening. Copper shares were irregularly higher on firmer prices for “copper metal in the export market. - Aircraft issues were higher

on reports the Netherlands will pur- E

chase planes here. Automobile is-

sues moved up under lead of Chrys- 2

ler. Railroad issues made small gains on improved earnings. Utilities firmed on the President's statement regarding Government in the power business. : Oils were down slightly on. a weakening in the price structure. Rubbers and electrical equipments made small advances.

Local Livestock

There was little in the news to influence the market in etiher direction.. Liverpool closed fractionally lower, while Winnipeg was about steady. An official Argentine wheat fore- _— of 319 million bushels had only

2|a slight bearish effect due to the

continued careful selling policy of the Argentine wheat board. There was selling in the local market against purchases at Winni-

|peg. This was fairly well absorbed

by scattered commission house dema,

nd. Corn prices followed an irregular trend.

By James Thrasher Approaching the end of his season with the NBC Symphony Orchestra, Arturo Toscanini is devot-

1, |ing his programs to the works of

a single composer. Last week his 90 minutes of music were given over to Brahms. Tonight he will conduct an all- Sibelius program (9 p. m., NBC-WIRE) and next_Saturday, for his final appearance, a concert of Wagner music drama excerpts. It is interesting to note that all of the four Sibelius compositions

‘lon tonight's concert are early works.

The latest, the Symphony No. 2, was completed in 1902, and is the composer’s Opus 43. The other music includes the tone poem, “En Saga,” iOpus 9; “The Swan of Tuonela,” Opus 22 Nes 3, and “Finlandia,” |. Opus 26 No. 7. The second is the best known and most popular of the composer's seven symphonies, and the other three works have done much to add to his world-wide fame. Yet Sibelius, now in his 74th year, has not, like Strauss and Debussy, for instance, done most of his important work before middle age. ” ” ”

Mischa Elman, one of our own , | orchestra’s soloists this season, will appear with the New York Philhar-monic-Symphony tomorrow in a performance of Saint-Saens’ B Minor Concerto. John Barbrolli also will conduct the “Euryanthe” Overture of Weber, Beethoven's “Pastoral” Symphony and Tschaikow-

lio” and the “Hymn

sky’s «Francesca da Riminl.” WFBM, 2 p. m. » 8 8 8 Lily Pons, who presumably has recovered from her recent illness, is scheduled to sing with the Detrol Symphony Orchestra at 8 p. m. to= morrow, CBS-WFBM. She has chosen Constance’s Air from Mo zart’s “Abduction from the Serag=to Sun” from “Le Coq d'Or.” by / - Korsakov, as well as songs by Rabey and Gounod. A feature of the or= chestra’s performance will be the Overture to “Amelia Goes to the

| Ball,’ the recent successful opera

by the young Italia-American, Gian Carlo Menotti.

#2 un 8 Since Brahm’s Clarinet Quintet is certainly one of the loveliest chamber music works ever written, your special attention is called to its performance on WENR's program of recordings at-11 p. m. tomorrow. Listeners are to hear the new recording recently made by the Busch Quartet and Reginald Kell. : 8 8 8 ry Dr. Luther Anton Richman, a nae tive of New Palestine and a former resident of Greenfield, Tipton and Lebanon, will be in charge of tomorrow’s “Music and American Youth” broadcast, NBC-Red, 9: 0 a. m. t 8 2

The Radio City Music Hall or-

{chestra. will give American pre-

mieres to two compositions at 11 a. m. tomorrow, NBC-Blue. With Erno Rapee conducting, the orchestra will play a Rondo Giocoso by the European composer-conductor, Edward Moritz, and a modern setting of Bazzini’s violin solo, “Round of the Goblin’s, by Joseph Cacciola. i 2 2

Dr. J. M. Coopersmith, music research director for WOR, is said to have collected almost 2000 pages of hitherto unpublished manuscript in Handel's autograph. The discoveries, result of seven years’ work, include an unknown supple= ment to “The Messiah.”
