WLsoi Famous AS BOY MINISTER
Son of Sailor-Preacher, He Smashed Saloons; Hit ‘Sawdust Trail.’
PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. 17 (U.P.). —Dr. Clarenee True "Wilson, vigorous prohibitionist, who died here yester=day, had both the rough heritage ‘of the sea and the zeal of a Meth‘'odist minister of the “old-fashioned” school of religion. His father was .a sailor, but: was ‘converted and be‘came a preacher.
Dr. Wilson, born April 24, 1872, at Milton, Del, quickly responded
to his religious "background. At-15.
he began preaching to convicts in the Delaware State Prison and he won renown as the “boy preacher.” Two years later, still in ‘school, he became pastor of a church in § small Delaware community. He was ordained a deacon when 18,. the youngest person ever admitted to the Methodist ‘ministry.
He won an A. B. degree and Phi Beta Kappa honors from the ministry of Southern California in 1894 and in 1895 he took. a B. D. degree from McClay College of theology in ‘Los Angeles. Two years later he received a degree from San Joaquin College. St. John’s and Wash“ington College later both gave him honorary doctorates. He remained at his first pastor age, Seaford, Del, from 1889 to 1891. Other pastorates in succession included Seaclift, Long Island, Pasadena, Cal, and San Diego. In 1901 he went to the St. Luke's Church of Newark, N. J. Four years later he came to Portland as head of the Grace Methodist Church.
Weds Maude Akin
Soon he began devoting most of his energies to the cause of prohi‘bition which became ga spectacular crusade before and during the World War. In 1910: he became general secretary- of the Methodist >». fd of Temperance, Prohibition an: ‘Public Morals. He held that “pos: until his retirement 26 years “later. - He was, married in Portland in 1907 to Maude Akin. They had two «daughters, Virginia and Marybeth. Besides the dry crusade, Dr. Wilson had three strangely divergent interests. He was an enthusiastic ‘breeder of dairy cattle; an ardent student of John Wilkes Booth and the fate of Lincoln’s assassin; and an advocate of simplified spelling. : He became convinced that a man who died in Enid, Okla. early in the 20th century was John Wilkes Booth, contrary to the generally ‘accepted story that Booth was killed in a Virginia barn. + Dr. Wilson acted as an agent in selling the mummy of “Booth” to “Idaho” Billy Evans at Ventura, Cal, ‘and it later became a carnival sideshow attraction. The ‘preacher wrote a book on his findings but it was never published. : He headed the Oregon AntiSaloon League and helped close Portland saloons, smash slot machines and gambling establishments. In 1931 he asked President Hoover to call out the Marines in New York and New Jersey to enforce prohibion. He toured the United States, Canada, England and France in the dry ‘cause. He hit the “sawdust trail” .. and barnstormed the country on a chautauqua program in a debate with Clarence Darrow, late great libreal lawyer, on the 18th amendment and repeal.
