FLIER SLEEPS AFTER DEATH’ RENDEZVOUS
i
Rolls and Crawls From Frozen Wilderness.
SPOKANE, Wash, Feb. 16 (U. P.). ~Students and attendants at the airport where he took off Saturday ~ night talked today only of how Roy Shreck returned “from death.” Only his perfect physical condition—and * his compass—they said, enabled him to fight through a frozen mountain wilderness for three days and “nights to reach civilization.
Mr. Shreck, 36, airport manager and weather bureau flier, was sleeping the clock around under in-
fluence of sedatives. His ordeal had |:
been so great that he couldn’t sleep normally. He was brought home yesterday from Coeur D’Alene, Ida., after his plane was wrecked in a blizzard and he “walked, rolled and crawled” 25 miles to a farmhouse. He was unharmed when his bi- _ plane was blown into a mountainside and wrecked early Sunday “somewhere” in the Copper Mountain range in Idaho, 50 miles east of here. He knew he was east of Spokane. ; He pried out the plane’s compass and, in his thick flying suit, began fighting huge snow drifts down into the valley. Daylight came and went three times, but Mr. Shreck lost count. He - kept struggling, automatically after a time. .“It-seemed to me I had been going for weeks and months when I finally saw the smoke of a farmhouse,” he said. “I thought I'd never make it there.”
Here Is the Hole Story of $4 in N ickels
—_
WHEELING, W. Va., Feb. i6 (U. P.).—Police “picked” their way along a trail in record time late yesterday to apprehend a 16-year-old student who took $4 in nickels from the Wheeling High School soda shop. When they found him, he ~ was flat broke. The nickels had dribbled slowly through a hole in his pocket, making a ‘ perfect trail over the two blocks from the school to his home.
DEATH IS BELIEVED NEAR FOR DR. WILSON
PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. 16 (U. P.). Condition of Dr. Clarence True Wilson, 66, prohibition advocate and Methodist leader, was reported today as “extremely critical.” He had not rallied from his second heart attack within three weeks. Attendants at Good Samaritan Hospital where Dr. Wilson has been confined since Jan. 27 doubted that he could survive the day. Complications of heart and kidney ailments left his resistance depleted, they said. He had amazed his doctors last week by rallying and they thought for a time that he might be able to return home. He suffered a second heart attack Tuesday night.
LONDONER REVIEWS ‘SITUATION IN EUROPE
Peace in Europe depends upon a stiffening in the attitude of France and England toward the totalitarian powers, F. F. Figgures of London, England, told members of the Midwest Council on International Relations at the Columbia Club yesterday. Mr. Figgures, who is secretarygeneral of the League of Nations Societies, said that the dictator states will discontinue their “bluffing” only when France and England take a firm stand against further aggressions. The speaker predicted that in the event of a general European war, both France and EngJand must look to the United States as a major source of war supplies.
2 DIE IN TRAIN WRECK; FASTING DEAN HURT
QUINCY, Miss., Feb. 16 (U. P.).— Two men were killed and a score of persons injured early today when the Sunnyland Limited of the Frisco Lines collided headon with a north-
bound freight train, two miles north of here. The dead: George W. Bowers, engineer of the passenger train, Amory, Miss. . Laddie Ivy, porter on the passenger train, Memphis. Among the injured was the Rev. Israel H. Noe of Memphis, St. James Episcopal Church rector who gained national attention last year by. fasting for 22 days while dean .of St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral. He was shaken up and bruised.
