HOPE BUILT ON POLICE SCHOOL
Fifty in City Department Will Study Latest Control Methods.
Fifty selected members of the In-
dianapolis Police Department will start to school Feb. 28 to learn the latest and most scientific methods of traffic control and safety. Formation of - the school is the first step in the City’s trafic SyS= tem reforms, recommended. by experts of the International Police
Chiefs Association safety division
and approved yesterday by the Safety Board. : The school will be directed by Sergt. Kenneth R. Dickinson of Evanston, Ill, representing the Police Chiefs’ safety division. He ‘will be assisted by Joseph Lingo of the. Purdue University Public Safety Bureau, Lieut. Rex Riser and Sergt. Paul Beverforden of the Indiana State Police and G. H. Hennegar, director of the Automobile Insurance Information and Protection Bureau, Indianapolis. Interest of the State Police in the Indianapolis Traffic School arises from plans of the State to CO-0p-erate with local police departments in training policemen in the best methods of traffic safety, Sergt. Dickinson said.
Propose 150 for Traffic Duty
At present 86 men are assigned to traffic duty and 25 to accident prevention work, a total of 111. The recommendations proposed a trafe fic safety department of 150 men. All recommendations of the traffic survey report were approved by the Safety Board with the understanding that some could not be put into effect at once because of budget limitations which preclude an ine crease. in personnel this year, Sergt. Dickinson proposed that 21 policemen now on traffic duty at street corners be released for other duty by the installation of traffic
control devices, which cost from |
$300 to $400 each. The Safety Board will attempt to raise money for these new signals, it was decided. ; Seven patrolmen now assigned to. check parking will be used part time on traffic duty, three being as~ signed to motorcycle duty. There now are 28 motorcycle policemen. Sergt. Dickinson recommended the addition of 32. i
