Ee By DR. GEORGE GALLUP American Institute of Public Opinion
NEW YORK, Feb. 15.—Important new evidence that the trend of American , public opinion today is toward relatively orthodox economic thinking rather than toward the newer economic views of Administration leaders is contained in the results of an American Institute of
Public Opinion survey dealing with the present State of busi-
iv 1932 the issue has been whether the ideas of business or the ideas of the New Deal should prevail in the attempt to bring about economic recovery. Democratic leaders have contended that the bld orthodox views of

is bringing it out of the depression. Does the public share this view? Do the voters look more to the Administration than to big business for help in solving present-day
economic problems? To resolve this issue the Ameri-| can Institute” put the following * question to a cross-section of voters . in every state:
“Do you think that, to create new

would be better to follow the ideas of big businessmen or the ideas of Administration?” The vote was

One interesting sidelight is that more than one-third of Democratic voters think it would be better to follow the ideas of businessmen rather than the Administration. The party vote follows:

Bacteriologically, the affliction was described as follows: “The poison may cause a sudden reaction in the body, in which cases the individual (usually between the ages of 15 and 25), without any warning symptoms, is thrown abruptly into the throes of the disease, or the reaction may slowly build up to full vigor, requiring a month or more completely to .possess the victim. “The poison apparently is carried to all parts of the body by the bloodstream end seems to affect certain of the endocrine glands, notably the adrenal. and parathyroid.

an party in a band of states stretching from New England to the Middle West. And a recent Institute study found that many voters are now beginning to link prospers ity and the Republican Party together in their minds. This study asked voters: “Do you think business would be better or worse today if we had a Republican President?” Among those who expressed an opinion, the majority said they
thought business would be better under a Republican President. The
vote of those with opinions was:
| Better Under Republican. .60% Worse Under Republican ..40
Virtually all Republicans (96 per cent) with opinions said “better.” But as many as one-third (33 per cent) of Democrats with opinions also said “better.” If the trend of sentiment continues away from the economic thinking of the New Deal, it seems
+ . clear that the Democrats will face
a difficult problem in 1940. They will have to combat the feeling that prosperity would be made more certain by following the ideas of big business and by returning to Republican léadership. And their problem will be intensified if, in 1240, there happens to be a downswing in the business cycle.
LA FOLLETTE SEEKS ASSAULT INQUIRY
Strike Probe Witnesses Intimidated, Charge.
WASHINGTON, Feb. 15.—Attorney General Murphy had been asked today to investigate charges of alleged assault on two Senate Civil Liberties Committee witnesses by
Capt. Dewey Jones, of the Repub-
lic Steel Corp. police. The investigation was asked by Senator Robert M. LaFollette Jr. (Prog. Wis), chairman of the Com‘mittee. The Senator advised Mr. Murphy that Capt. Jones had appeared privately before the Committee and “admittéd substantially” charges o assault and intimidation made by Bernard Rebuck and Howard Cavan, mechanics of an Elwood, Ind., automobile agency. Mr. Rebuck and Mr. Cavan were witnesses before the Committee during its inquiry into strikes involving Republic Steel Corp.

mission’s investigation of the Transamerica Corp. huge Pacific Coast holding company, was delayed again today by refusal of witnesses to testify or produce corporation records. The hearing was adjourned until March 20 at the request of SEC counsel O. John Rogge, who will confer with SEC commissioners before acting on “the most outrageous case of contumacy I have ever heard.” Two courses of action are open to the SEC against four “witnesses who yesterday defied, on advice of counsel, the agency's right to subpena records. They are: Ask the Federal Court to direct the witnesses to produce the records or face contempt charges. Take the witnesses into court directly on a criminal charge. The 1934 Securities Exchange Act provides for a $1000 fine or one year imprisonment, or both, for refusal |, to testify or to produce records in|r answer to a SEC subpena. Charge False Statements
The SEC began the hearings last month to determine whether TransAmerica’s capital stock should be barred from trading on Néw York, Los Angeles and San Francisco stock exchanges. The SEC alleges. that Transamerica’s statement contained “false and misleading statements.”
The conflict between the SEC and Transamerica witnesses was the second since the hearings started. The first dispute is pending before the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. Hearings have been set for March 6. Yesterday’s controversy involved trading by Pacific Coast Mortgage Co. in Transamerica stock.
Transamerica, elaims shat Pacific Coast Mortgage was sold to A: O. Stewart in 1932. The SEC contends that Transamerica continued to exercise influence in the company after that date.
