1910 Vintage Costumes See Light Again for Civic’s Show Tonight

Parties Arranged for Double Door’ Performance; Men’s Clothes. Are a Real Problem; Lambs Dinner Fete Is Planned.

By VIRGINIA MOORHEAD MANNON : While costumes may not make the actress they are _ a recognized factor in summoning the proper mood for a “role. Several gowns of a generation ago have emerged from their tissue wrappings to induce a 1910 aura around the heroines of “Double Door,” which opens tonight at the Civic Theater. *

Noel Collier, leading lady, will make her initial entrance as a ‘bride wearing the creamy Duchess lace-trimmed satin gown in which Mrs. John Ray Newcomb was married in 1911 in Jacksonville, . Ill. The dress is fashioned with high waist and train and elaborate _ satin rosette at une side of the skirt. Miss Collier also will wear the Duchess lace bridal veil Mrs. Newcomb brought from Brussels. The imported broadcloth traveling suit in which Miss Collier _ subsequently appears came to the Civic from Mrs. Bertha Murphy via her nephew Jay Crackel. The Russian style of the costume with its fitted jacket and skirt with pleats stitched down over the hips is nearly as smart today as it was 30 years ago. :. A period costume selected for Mrs. G. B, Jackson is of fragile pastel blue batiste with lace medallions and rows of dainty lace insertion outlining the gores of the skirt. At the age of 17, Mrs. Mary Osterman Benson chose the dress to wear to the “coming cut” party of the late Mrs, Roland Sherman of Winchester, Mass., who spent her girlhood here. Do you remember when the wellsdressed young man combivied - cap and ‘wing collar? It's been rough sledding for the costume coms: mittee to track down Prince Alberts and cutaways for the masculive membei's of the cast and the narrow frousers which were high fashion circa 1910 are decidedly at a premium. Ned LeFevre, leading man, has constituted a real sartorial problem. He has four changes of costume.
