Engine Assembly Chiefs Keep Close I ye On Fluctuations in Outside T emperature
5-Degree Variation May Throw. Cylinder Bore: Wee Bit Askance.
By JOHN B. MILLIS United Press Staff Correspondent _ DETROIT, Feb. *10-—Cold winter days find: production experts on engine assembly lines in automobile factories scanning -the weather reports with ‘as much interest as the housewife who wonders if it is going ta be too cold to go shopping. With the mercury in Detroit currently fluctuating between zero and 30 degrees above, engine assembly line experts must keep one eye on the thermometer and the other on the precision metal parts that go into the engine. If the temperature in the plant varies as much as five degrees on either side of the 70-degree mark, some engine parts expand or contract from one ten-thousandth to one-thousandth of an inch. If the mercury fluctuates five to 10 degrees from one day to the next, for exs
ample, assembly workers have their |
hands full when it comes to cylinder bores and pistons. They are fitted together so accurately that they are measured down .to the ten-thou-sandths of an inch. 70 Degrees Is Ideal At the De Soto plant, production men have developed several methods of getting around the difficulties encountered during cold weather. When the cylinder blocks are first started down the line, they are on a conveyor that travels through a " hot water bath. By the. time they reach the spot where pistons, piston rods and wrist pins are fitted—the spot where parts are fitted to the 10-thousandths of an inch—their temperature registers about 70 degrees. This, production men have found, is the ideal temperature for engine assembly. In the case of pistons, a special blower heater is constantly pouring heated air on the pistons at the point of fitting to normalize their size and insure perfect fit. The process warms them to the “master” temperature of about 70 degrees— the temperature the block registers where the pistons are installed. In the summer, when plant temperature soars, the blocks and pistons are cooled instead of heated to normalize their size. Cold water is used to bathe the blocks and cold air is poured over the pistons in- - stead of warm air.
