OIL HEAD. DIES,
Sir Noni Noted: for Fight
‘To Wrest Control From Standard Oil.
' AMSTERDAM, Feb. 6 (U. P).— Sir Henri Deterding, 72, former president of the Royal Dutch Petroleum Co., died of a heart attack Saturday at St. Moritz, Switzerland. - Sir Henri had been vacationing in the winter resort. ‘A Dutchman by birth, Sir Henri was knighted by Great Britain in 1921. As director-general of the
Royal ‘Dutch Co., he battled the Rockefeller Oil Interests. His Com-
pany, incorporated for $520,0000 when ‘Sir Henri became associated with’ it in: 1892, had resources of | $175,000,000 in 1920. He resigned, his director-generalship in 1936 but remained director of the oil company. . Weds: Second Time
He was divorced by his first wife in 1936 on grounds of misconduct. Two weeks later he married Fraulein Charlotte Minna Knaack, a German, who was 38 years old. He was then 70 years of age. The -short, swarthy-faced Duichman ‘became known as the “Napoleon” of the oil world. When he balanced his books for the last time in a small Java bank to become associated with. Royal Dutch Henri Deterding knew that John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Co. dominated the : petroleum field by crushing competition. He studied the American company’s methods and when in 1900 upon, the death of J. D. August Kessler he was made managing director of his company, Mr. Deterding: was ready for the fight. It was. opened in China where the Standard Oil Company has distributed . gratis thousands of “Mei Foo” (good luck) lamps, with a view to stimulating oil sales. - Mr. Deterding countered by offering cheaper petrol. The passive Chinese ponGered over the situation awhile and soon - the housands of Rockefeller lamps were burning Deterding oil.
~ Aligned With Rothschilds
Encouraged by his victory, the young Dutchman in 1903 formed an alliance with the Rothschilds in Paris and with Sir Marcus Samuel, head of the Shell Company which owned oil interests. in Russia. “He had before him always the belief that the nation which controlled the oil supply would rule the world. With .the new financial support, . Deterding began his conquest of ‘the oil world. Land was leased or bought in Russia, Egypt, Venezuela, Trinidad, Mexico and in the United States, where he matched wits and dollars time after time with the Rockefeller interests. One incident is indicative of his love of battle. Warned by a business colleague that he could never beat the Rockefeller interests, Deterding. replied: “I wills put up dollar for dollar with the Standard Oil Co.”
Thorough Like Cromwell
_ Mr. Deterding was director genera! of the company and director of the Shell Transport and Trading company as well as holding directorates on boards of 45 subsidiary companies. Advancing years did not rob him of any of the acuteness that prompted one observer to say of him “he is Napoleonic in his audacity and Cromwellian ‘in his thoroughness.” He gave up active direction of te Royal Dutch Co. at the close of He was born in Amsterdam on April 19, 1866. As: he - afterward ° said, his childhood “was very happy.” . His father was a master mariner and away from home much of the time. As a youth he attended a “Higher Citizens’ School” in Amsterdam and after being graduated at 16 he became the youngest employee of the} Twentsche Bank of Amsterdam. That was on July 1, 1882. His salary was $120 a week. In a short time he decided to enter the bank’s foreign service and won a bookkeeper’s job at Dehli, India. A few years later he quit banking to enter the oil business. He owned a home near Ascot, an estate at Norfolk and a luxurious flat in a London residential district. Although considered among the world’s richest men, he lived in comparative simplicity.
