Personal Exeuptions.

In addition to the personal exemption of $1000 for a single person or a married person not living with husband or wife and $2500 for married persons living together and for heads of families, a taxpayer is entitled to a credit of $400 for each dependent, defined by income tax law and regulations as a person under 18 years of age or incapable of self-support because mentally or physically

defective. The term “mentally or physically defective” means not only cripples and those mentally defective but persons in ill health

In order to be entitled to the $400 credit, the taxpayer must

sales of 98 independent stores in Indianapolis showed an increase of 46.9 per cent in dollar volume for December, 1938, over November and

an increase of 9.6 per cent as compared to December, 1937, according to estimates of the Bureau of Foreign. and Domestic Commerce released today. Sales ‘of 747 independent stores in Indiana rose 40 per cent in December over November, and 7 per cent over December a year ago. NEW YORK, Feb. 3 (U., P)— Engineering construction awards for January swelled 15 ‘per cent above December and 64 per cent ahead of the 1938 month to the largest total for the period since 1929, Engineering News record reported today. For the week ended today awards were 19 per cent ahead of the preceding week, but 17 per cent below the 1938 period when a 34 milliondollar contract for Grand Coulee Dam was| awarded. ie conn awards for the year
