CHAVEZ UNDER FIRE AT TRIAL

Government Claims Miller Injected Politics Into New Mexico WPA.

| . | ALBUQUERQUE, N. M, Feb. 3 U. P.)—The Government attempts day to prove that Senator Chavez n-in-Taw, Stanley W. P. Miller, is ty of political manipulation and timidation among New Mexico reef workers. Mr. Miller was assistant Federal attorney until his indictment, with o Senator's sister and 43 others, ‘charges of conspiring’ to defeat tor Chavez’ political opponents ugh control of WPA jobs. arges against 10 were dismissed hen the trial began Monday. Emma Jean Cervantes, a statisti‘in the WPA assignment office, tified that after Mr. Miller's frejuent calls the assignment clerk uld give her names of persons , Miller had suggested for certain

Federal Prosecutor Everett Grant2 concentrated today on Mr, Miller, his former assistant, after producing evidence of Mrs. Anita Tafoya's political activity. Mrs. ‘Ta/foya, Chavez’ sister, made speeches to sewing project women and was ‘around the assignment office so much, said witnesses, that they “thought she belonged there.” Defense counsel asked witnesses if the women didn’t all like Mrs. Tafoya ‘and if she wasn’t well known for social work.. WPA Investigator William H. Kinler, San: Francisco, said he obtained statements from 50 WPA employees as to coercion and intimidation of workers before the Albuquerque city election which Chavez forces won last April. The coersion, he said, came from those holding supervisory WPA jobs. Mr. Kinler was ordered here by Washington officials. After his report, WPA Administrator Harry L. Hopkins removed New Mexico Administer Fred Healy. Mr. Kinler said he recommended that Mr. Healy dismiss five minor officials, but that Mr. Healy seemed reluctant to act. E. A. Rose, former zone supervisor dismissed as a defendant in the trial, testified that he fired” the eight at Mr. Healy’s ultimate direction. Later, he said, three of the men were reinstated on different Jobs.

YOUTH'S CONDITION . ‘FAIR’. AFTER BLAST

Doctors Uncertain if Starks’ Sight Will Be Affected.

The condition of William Starks, 8621 Central Ave., Butler University freshman who was burned yesterday when acid he was boiling in the chemistry laboratory exploded, remained “fair” in St. Vincent's Hospital today. Z Physicians said they had not determined whether his sight would be impaired. Nine other students were blistered slightly and cut by the explosion, which scattered acid and glass through the room in which about 55 were working. Mr. Starks was boiling a mixture of sulphuric acid and potassium permanganate, an experiment which school officials said had nothing to do with thé course, in an effort to create a glass polisher.

5TH CENTURY VASES ARE FOUND IN TOMBS

NANCY, France, Feb. 3 (U. P.)— Fifteen glass vases dating from the Sth Century were discovered in the village of Haut-de-Tombeaux on the banks of the Moselle when a cemetery of 72 tombs dating from the Middle Ages was excavated. Modern spectographic analysis at the Paris Optical Institute established the age of the vases, which were made in the region but from materials which could only have come from the Far East and probably peddled by wandering nomad graders of that period. Systematic excavations have been started to find further medieval objects.
