U. S. BANKS ADOPT NEWER METHODS
NEW YORK, Feb. 2 (U..P.).— The nation’s banks are adopting new business methods because of the changed conditions under which they are now forced to operate, Leonard P. Ayres, chairman of the research council of the American Bankers Association said today. Intermediate capital loans to business are being extended, enlarged volumes of mortgage loans ‘are being made on a plan of “scientific
personal loans or consumer credits are being established, he said. These, he added, are only some of the means whereby banks are attempting to offset the “changes which have occurred in our national life” and have reacted upon our banking “to a distinct degree.” An outstanding example of these changes, he pointed out, “is the publicly expressed demand that social service and responsibility enter into banking in a larger sense than ever before.”

Estimate Puts Consolida'ed Profit at $119,081.49 For Year.
Consolidated profit of $119,081.49 for 1938, after provision for Fedaral income tax, depreciation and all charges, was announced today in a preliminary estimate by Real 3ilk Hosiery Mills, Ine, and subsidiary 1 | companies. This compares with a consolidsted profit of $20,583.33 for 1937 after provision for Federal income . aX, depreciation and all charges, including $76,154.62 for Indiana gross income taxes on interstate shipments. This latter item was credited to surplus for 1938, since the U. S. Supreme Court declared such a tax unconstitutional in 1938, company officials said. Depreciation charges against operations for 1938 are approximately $21,000 less than the amount charged in 1937, officials said. The preliminary estimate is subject to such changes or corrections as may be made as a result of an audit now being conducted by certified public accountants in conrection with the preparation of the company’s balance sheet and operating .statements as of Dec. 31, 1938.
