A decline in both employment and payrolls of 2039 Indiana establishments from mid-December to midJanuary has reversed the upward trend which ran five consecutive months, the State Employment Service reported today. . 2 Preliminary tabulations of midJanuary reports, as compiled by the service, showed that in the state's nonmanufacturing and manufacturing plants, employment dropped 4.9 per cent and payrolls 5.1 per| cent, compared with levels reached in mid-December. In Indianapolis, 324 firms reported a decrease of 6.6 per cent in employment and 7.9 per cent in payrolls. “Decreases were so uniformly distributed through the Indiana establishments studied,” the Service reported, “that little change in the final tabulation for January is ex-
pected. : ‘Letdown Anticipated’
“A letdown after the holidays was anticipated. The degree of the dip . probably can be accounted for by the postponement of the winter slump. Employment and payroll advances in Indiana in November and December were contraseasonal in most industries.” Greater ‘than seasonal decreases were experienced in Hoosier manufacturing employment, the report showed. Figures from 827 manufacturing plants showed that 93,333 wage earners were employed in midJanuary, a drop of 3.9 per cent from the number employed in mid-De-cember. - Weekly payrolls in factories decreased 5.1 per cent, according to the report. Indexes of Indiana rhanufacturing employment show that a decrease of .9 per cent. in normal for this period. * A decline of 7.6 per cent in employment and 5.1 per cent in payrolls of the State’s 1212 nonmanufacturing establishments from midDecember to mid-January | was ‘traced to “a normal decline in retail activity following the Christmas rush.” Lo : Only 2 Expanded 2
Of the 14 major groups of manufacturing industries studied, only two expanded employment during the period. . These were railroad repair shops, which increased employment 3.6 per cent, and clay, stone and glass products which had employment increases aggregating .8 per cent. + . In comparison with a year| ago, factory employment in the State was up 13 per cent. Employment in durable goods factories was .1 per eent below January a year ago, but payrolls were 34.5 per cent higher. In nondurable goods factories, employment was 4 per cent greater and payrolls 10.9 per cent higher compared to January, 1938.

At the close of the trial yesterday, Judge Goett refused to grant either a divorce and said: “Your parents should take both of you back of the woodshed and administer an . old-fashioned spanking.” The wife, mother of two’ small children, originally brought the divorce suit and the husband had filed a crosscomplaint against her. After each had told about the other’s misdeeds, Judge Goett warned them that “society expects both of you to provide a home for the children and you should be made to take that responsibility.”

WASHINGTON, Feb. 2 (U. P.).— The Federal Power Commission an‘nounced today that total production of electric energy in the United States during 1938 was 115,825,000,000 kwh, approximately 4 per cent less in 1937, _ Generation of electricity through water power reached an all-time high in 1938 of 44,078,000,000 kwh, eight-tenths of 1 per cent! more than in 1937.
