FACULTY PURGE
~ Charges That Instructors in Two Universities Teach Communism.
By LEE HILLS Times Special Writer . OKLAHOMA CITY, ‘Jan. 380— The issues of civil rights and academic freedom were raised today in Oklahoma by a demand of Governor Phillips for the summary dismissal of “more than half a ‘dozen” faculty members of the state's two leading universities. “I have enough evidence to convince me these faculty members have been teaching communism,” Governor Phillips said. “I want them fired right away.” . The 200-pound, red-haired exec- . utive used the word “teaching,” not “advocating.” He made no distinetion between explanation of communism and propaganda for it. | Governor Phillips’ surprise sta ment drew nation-wide attention for a second time to a conservative Democratic Governor who has been in office only three weeks.
Criticizefl Federal Dam
In his inaugural message he challenged the New Deal by attacking the proposed 54 million dollar Federal dam project on the Red River in southern Oklahoma. His cry was “state [rights,” and his themes were ~ “economy” and “balance the budget.” 2 The demand for a purge of educators | followed a week's legislative debate over a “criminal syndicalism” bill, which would make sitdown strikers guilty of a felony punishable y imprisonment to 10 years. The il, couched in vague language; ~ was opposed as inviting invasions of Constitutional rights, and as a club over labor. While refusing to name the faculty members he ordered fired, Governor Phillips announced he was demanding that the heads of the University of Oklahoma and of Oklahoma A, and M. College take _ action before he considers appropriation bills for those institutions. He said his attack also was aimed at’ the teaching of fascism and . naziism, although he did not charge that these isms have been expounded in State schools. He indicated he desired no further investigation or hearings.
Religious Schools Targets
During hearings on the Criminal Syndicalism Bill, its author, Rep. Tom Kight of Claremore (in whose district WPA workers last year staged a sit-down strike at relief headquarters), charged that Communist principles are being taught at the University of Oklahoma School of Religion. This is an interdominational schecol supported by chyrch contributions. Dean E. N. Comfort of the School of Religion said he would deny ‘the charge before legislative committees this week. At Norman, President W. B. Bizzell of the University of Oklahoma said he would welcome an investigation. “I don’t believe there are Communists on the pay ¥oll,” Dr. Bizzell “I've ‘been’ prety zealous ftrying to know what ‘is being taught. I don’t know what is in a man’s heart, but I've been talking to them and I don't find facts to justify the accusations.”
GIVEN 14 YEARS IN WOMAN’S KILLING
CHICAGO, Jan. 30 (U. P.).—Earl Sicks, 18, was under sentence to-| 2 day to serve 14 years in prison for participation in the slaying of Mrs. Florence Johnson, 37, a fireman’s w.fe. Hicks was a companion of Robert Nixon, 18, who was found guilty of having beaten Mrs. Johnson to death with a brick in her home last May during a burglary. Nixon, who has confessed the slayings of four other women and a girl, here and at Los Angeles, is under sentence to die. Hicks appeared as a state witness against Nixon.
SCIENCE SHATTERS LIGHTNING LEGEND
PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 30 (U. P.). —The legend that lightning never strikes, twice in the same place today hdd been shattered by Dr. Karl B. McEachron, director of General Electric’s high-voltage laboratory at * Schenectady, N. Y. Lightning, Dr. McEachron said, struck the 1250-100t Empire State Building, in New York, 68 times within three years. Special cameras were used to make the discovery,

BENSON FLAYS ‘GIMME Then |
Warns Listeriers at ‘Y’ Big Meeting Against Dictators.
Society is suffering from a disease known as the “gimmies,” according to Dr. John C. Benson, general superintendent of the Methodist Hospital. Speaking at the Y. M. C. A. Big
Meeting at Keith's Theater yesterday, Dr. Benson declared: “The human race is suffering from the illusion of getting something for nothing, and what this is doing to the human personality is too sad to contemplate.” Human personality “has been lost in the miasma of socialistic tomfoolery,” he said. “Unless something is done to restore the individual to his throne of power, there will come a dictatorship on a mass basis to take over the perogative of the individual. “Only religious faith will save us from the inertia of the commonplace and the slavery of blind socialism that forfeits human rights.”
