STOCK LIST OFF AFTER FIRMING ~ INEARLY TRADE
Many Traders Sell to Be Out Of Market Pending Speech by Hitler.
NEW YORK, Jan, 28 (U. P).— The stock market tried unsuccessfully to extend yesterday’s advance in today’s short session. The list was drifting lower as closing time neared. ; : Prices showed gains ranging to a point at the opening and later firmed further. However, many traders sold to be out of the market pending delivery of Adolf Hitler's Speech on Monday and Prime Min-
ister Chamberlain’s radio address fir wi a El
this afternoon. Around closing time, losses pre-
dominated, although there was a Aug A Le ‘sizeable sprinkling of gains. Small
declines were noted in motors, steels,
oils and chemicals. Rails, aviations| Ama 1

Some demand came into the|lam Bk pa pf “building section. U. S. Gypsum rose | 4m 2°
nearly 2 points, Hercules Powder on 200 shares rose 4 points to 76. Louisville & Nashville had a 2-point gain and advances of a, point or so were noted in Homestake Mining, Chemical; and May Department Stores. U. S. Steel touched 55%, up %,
but near closing time it was down|,

then fell 2 points from the high be- am
fore meeting support. General Mo-
tors sagged about a point from its 4

Opening quotations in wheat were unchanged to 3 cent lower, with scattered selling based on a forecast of rain and snow in the Southwest wheat belt. Firmness at Liverpool tended to restriet. selling, However, and a little support was uncovered in buying by cash interests. Price movements were small, - Most traders were inclined to take a waiting position until further developments are seen in. the European political situation. Liverpool wheat closed % to 8 | cent higher, influenced by Russian | demand for Australian wheat. Sale| of seven cargoes for shipment to Vladivostok was confirmed. It was reported that Russia was inquiring for American Pacific Coast wheat which is slightly cheaper than the Australian grain. | Export business in North American cereals was insignificant. The versatile Georges Enesco will take a comparatively modest part in tomorrow’s broadcast by the New {York Philharmonic-Symphony Or‘chestra (2 p. m., CBS-WFBM). His role will be simply that of com-poser-conductor, while, as everyone who knows anything about Mr. Enesco can tell you, he might easily be playing the violin or the piano, or maybe even presenting one of his famous pupils as soloist. This is the third successive year he.has relieved John Barbirolli during the latter's vacation. Tomorrow’s program will give listeners a hearing of Mr. Enesco’s Symphony Concertante for cello and orchestra, with that excellent artist, Felix Salmond, as soloist. Beethoven will be the only other composer represented. The con“Coriolanus" Overture, and closes with the Seventh Symphony. 8 # ® :
Arturo Toscanini has been tending toward music of legendary ine spiration in recent programs. So, for tonight's NBC Symphony (NBCWIRE, 9 p. m.), we shall hear compositions based on Greek, Andalusian and. Swiss traditional stories, as well as the Eighth Symphony of Beethoven, which has no “plot” except that which critics have thought up for it since it was written. Mr. Toscanini’s first selection is the Overture to Gluck’s “Iphigenia in Aulis,” based on a Greek legend in which the heroine is rescued in : 8 ” 2
