CHICAGO, Jan. 26 (U. P.).—Dr. - Gustav Egloff, noted oil chemist, announced today the development of a catalytic cracking process which he believes soon may revolutionize the oil and auto industries and make it possible for the U. 8. alone to supply. enough Le plane and automobile gasoline for| the world, - I He said the process assures a plentiful supply of gasoline of 100 octane rating — the measure-of a gasoline’s antiknock value—which is a. necessity for the efficient operation of airplane motors. : “There has been some concern as to where sufficient supplies of the proper. aviation gasoline were to come from,” he said, “particularly. since President: Roosevelt recommended about a 20-fold ‘increase in the number of fighting airplanes over the next few. years. The best and most efficient airplane motors today demand gasoline of 100 octane rating. Catalytic cracking can make it.” Molecules Split Cracking is a process by which the molecules of crude oil are split apart to produce gasoline. Various forms of catalytic cracking have been developed and used commercially. Dr. Egloff and associates developed the new process: in the laboratories of a Chicago oil company (Universal), of which he is chief research chemist. He *is = member of the American Chemical Society and its authority on questions pertaining to oil. The new process employs a potent natural force known as catalysis— premotion of a reaction by a neutral agent. The crude oil is vaporized and the vapors are passed over the surface ‘of a catalytic agent, which parts the molecules with a high degree of selectivity and at great speed, rearranging them as required for gasoline, “The process produces a kind of

gasoline that could not be made in large quantities before,” Dr. Egloff said. = : Gasoline now is produced by the Dubb’s cracking process, a thermal, or. heat-treating process, in which crude oil is subjected to great heat while being held under pressure.
“The thermal cracking process,” Dr. Egloff said, “produces yields of 70 to 75 of gasoline of 72 octane rating. The new catalytic process produces 85 per cent of gasoline of 81 octane rating or ‘higher and gasoline of 100 octane rating can be made at will. “By use of the process, together with existing cracking equipment, all demands for automobile and airplane gasoline can be completely met for the whole world from the crude reserves available in the United States. “A new era in automobile design
