"WILLIS DECISION 1S KEPT SECRET AFTER PARLEY

Aids Refuse to Reveal Whether He Will Make Senate Contest. ———

By DANIEL M. KIDNEY Times Staff Writer WASHINGTON, Jan. 24.— Noel Neal, Noblesville attorney and Willis campaign manager, refused to comment today on whether or not a final decision for a Senate contest for the seat of Senator ‘#anNuys (D. ; Ind) was reached at a series of se- * cret conferences with Republican leaders here. Na Raymond E. Willis, Angola publisher and G. O. P. Senatorial candidate who claims he lost the November election through ballot tampering, attended the conferences. Meetings were held with John D. M. Hamilton, national Republican chairman, Senator McNary (R. Ore.), Republican floor leader, and Senator Townsend (R. Del.), Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee chairman. Others from Indiana attending were Mr. Neal; Carl Ogle, who had charge of campaign publicity at Republican State headquarters, and Judge Clyde Carlin, Angola.

Gates Also in City Ralph Gates, Columbia City, Fourth District Republican chairman, also was with them for a time, but said he took no part in the distussions and came here to attend a rehabilitation meeting of the American Legion.

All but Mr. Neal and Mr. Gates|

left for Indianapolis last night. National Republican headquarters reported that the visitors had considerable evidence of alleged fraudulent_election returns and that the meeting there was to discuss the best method to proceed in placing them before the Senate. Counties involved were said to be Vigo, Vanderburgh and Lake. Two Per Cent Club activities also figure prominently in the evidence, according to reports.

Talks With Senators

A conference was held at the Capitol with Senators McNary and Townsend. Both Senators told Mr. Willis they could not pass on the

evidence in advance, since in such a contest they would be cast in the role of jurymen. ‘They explained the procedure whereby charges could be filed and then turned over to the Senate Committee on Privileges and Elec‘tions which would recommend whether the Senate should take action on them. Although Senator VanNuys’ good friend, Senator George (D:- Ga.) is chairman of that committee and his Junior colleague, Senator Minton (D. Ind.), a member, it is considered likely that an investigation would be made if the evidence warranted, it was predicted. Senator VanNuys declared he knew nothing of Mr. Willis’ visit here. Previously he has stated that he would welcome any legitimate investigation and does not want the © seat unless it was honestly won.

P)— Adrain Miller, 31, former Racine, Wis., engineering student charged with the strangulation of 17-year-old Alice Mae Girton here Oct. 13, will be tried March 20, his attorney said today. CITY WILL INSPECT ‘FIRE TRAP’ HOMES

Owners’ Co 708 operation Asked By Chief Kennedy.

Chief Kennedy today ordered an inspection of all buildings in the City for possible fire hazards. Because half of all fires are in private dwellings, he asked for cooperation from home owners > permit firemen to make inspections. He said no home would be inspected without the owner’s permission, however. Many house fires result from {

proper wiring or the installation of cheap fixtures, Chief Kennedy said Electrical contractors are asking that a thorough inspection of el tric wiring be made, he added.
