WARNS OF JoY RIDE TO CRIME

Urges Youths to Resist Lure of Car Theft.

A great many youths who wirid up in prison joy ride their way into crime in stolen cars, Rolf T. Harbo, Washington, assistant to J. Edgar Hoover, Federal Bureau Investigation chief, said this afternoon in an interview. Mr. Harbo is to address the Irvington Union tonight in the public

school at Ritter and E. Washington Sts. He was the guest here of Herold Reinecke, in charge of the FBI. “Most of the youths start by joy riding, apparently innocently. Then when they cannot get a car, they

"| steal one,” he said. “If they are not

discovered, or if they are caught and are improperly punished, they try it again. By the time they have stolen three or four cars, they are well on their way to being criminals.” Mr. Harbo said that the crime trend was downward from 1930 to 1936 and that radio, and new and swifter police techniques acted as deterrents to crime. He said a burg-

lar, for instance, who has been ap-

prehended once because: of -the swiftness with which police now are able to work, is unlikely to try it again.

One was ° crawling in “the front door, he said two or three times. “All right,” some one said as he downed another, “have it your way. You can see an “alligator.” : Then he looked at the front door. He saw an alligator. Then everyone saw an, alligator. Then everyone left so hurriedly that the back door, oridnarily wide. enough, created a bottle neck condition. - The alligator belonged to Ed Bensman, attendant in a nearby filling station. He caught up with it, petted it, and took it home. Next drinks were on the house.

Xm!Cx-Even You May Be A Bit Wacky

BOSTON, Jan. 20 (U. PJ. —The United States has such a bad case of jitters that there won't be a sane person around in 2139, David Seabury, New York psychologist and author, believes. : Speaking at Ford Hall Forum, he cited statistics from the English Academy of Medicine to support his conten-

tion.’ “The United States is on the verge of a collapse,” he said. “We have ‘a bad case of jitters. The panic following the Orson Welles radio drama and the fact that we spend more time teaching college students how to raise hogs than how to raise children are ‘evidences. of our insanity. “We. live in 1939 mechanically, but socially, . morally and ethically, we live in the year 939. What can keep a man sane? Why, two of nine marriages end in divorce. Isn't that itself Sriaenie of insanity? “Lack of democracy 5 the home is a main cause of insanity. Any mother who says to a child, ‘Mother knows best,’ is an autocrat.” , Moreover, Mr. Seabury said, each year almost as many people enter insane asylums as colleges.

Bureau of Agricultural Economics reported today. Hoosier agricultural prices closed at an index of 94.8 using 1910-14 as 100, they reported. The December figure was 1.2 points higher than the preceding month, Average during the year was 9.8, with March registering a top of 1044 and October sinking to 92.6. The 1937 index was 129.3, largely reflecting good ‘business conditions before the recession set in, the bureaus reported. Purchasing power of Indiana farm products for 1938 was set at 80, two points lower than the 1937 figure,
