By LEO DAUGHERTY For the basketball life of him ‘Mr, Arthur I. Trester, Indiana
High School Athletic Association Commissioner, was stumped today when he was [asked what day it was.’ | . His memory and calendar showed . ‘that it was Jan. 20, but he didn’t recall that it wds on this identical January date 4] years ago that Dr. James Naismith invented the game of basketball.
Forty-seven years is a short span

markable thing] about basketball is [that its inventor still lives and durling his own lifetime has watched Ithe sport grow | into the nation’s most popular winter pastime. Meet the Old Sufficiently rested and feeling like royalty after winning the city championship, | Oral Bridgford’s Manual Redskins have an evening's task cut out for them at Washington tonight. The game should be something better than was seen at the late City public high school tournament for it ‘pits the new champs against the dethroned title holders. Coach Rowland Jones of the Continentals no donbt will find it difficult to maintain his usual calm composure on the bench. The Shortridge Blue Devils, still . smarting after their rout mn the tournament, have to face a stubborn Irishman tonight. It’s Cathedral against Kenny Peterman’s North Siders at Tech gym. The teams are using the East| Side goalhouse because it has aj large seating capacity. - : * .
Sacred Heart entertains Pittsboro M!

Coach Everett Case of the Frankfort Hot Dags, inventor of the stall, watched his lads go through two periods of slow action the other night against [the Lebanon Tigers. New Augusta got off to an early lead and was never headed, although the Franklin team made a strong bid in the last few minutes. Burgess, Franklin forward, hit a field goal to pring the count to 21-19 and converted a free throw shortly afterward. The spurt, however, was cut short by the gun. New Augusta led, 4 to 1, at the quarter and 12 to 9 at the half. + Young collected three field goals and a free throw to capture high honors for the winners, while Walker paced the losers with nine points. Coach Robert Gladden’s Hawks apparently played “under wraps” most of the tilt and finished with several second-stringers on -the floor. Vernon Miller, lanky Decatur Central center, 'was particularly outstanding in under-the-basket play and pushed through five field goals and a free throw for high-point honors. By United Press Hoist the storm warnings, boys, because there’s a “big blow” under way in Indiana high school basketall. If you have your doubts, ask tne folks around Hammond today and theyll tell you how the storm began in their sector. iE
The Wildcats, comprising one of the teams expected to cut a big swath toward the state tournament, were bowled over last night for their third defeat of the season.
{Froebel of Gary defeated them, 28
to 20, in one of the Calumef district’s major upsets of the year. No one expected the deluge of baskets that descended on Hammond, since Froebel had won only one victory before last night in the western division of the Northern Indiana Conference. But the Blue Devils took command in the: first quarter and held the lead all the way. Only once—in the third period—did - the Wildcats threaten.
Two Tough Ones for Jeff
The storm is expected to descend elsewhere in the state in today’s heavy round of fireworks, and continue its blow. through tomorrow night. Undefeated Jeffersonville
{must tackle two tough opponents—
Evansville Bosse tonight and Anderson tomorrow night. Undefeated Huntingburg after taking on Cannelton tonight, dives into Evansville Reitz tomorrow night. Even the most conservative observers see -the possibility of these two undefeated clubs being blasted for the first tine. The only other team in the state with a clean face, South Bend Central, is expected to come through the storm with little trouble, playing at Goshen tonight and at home with Kelvyn Park of Chicago tomorrow night. "A glance at the important game played thus far this week shows several notable things. Ft. Wayne, South Side, protecting its state championship laurels, pushed over Ft. Wayne Central, 43-36, but Kokomo, a team that has been defeated only once this season, was hard-pressed in outpointing Muncie, 25-23. Two teams which will bear watching--they have Been coming along fast after a slow start—are Logansport and Hagerstown. Lo-
