U-EVANSVILLE MERGER UP FOR TRUSTEES’ VOTE

College Board to Decide Stand; Church Group 0. K.’s Proposal.

Evansville College trustees are to vote tomorrow on ‘the proposal that the college become an extension unit of Indiana University. Yesterday an Indiana Methodist Conference advisory committee of 25 recommended that the Indiana annual conference which meets in

Bedford Jan. 27 approve the transfer. The committee, headed by

Bishop Edgar Blake, Detroit, board of trustees president, met at the Roberts Park Methodist Church. Governor Townsend said he was

told the transfer could be made by an amendment to the charter which would name Indiana University trustees as trustees of Evansville College. The college would retain its name, he said he was told, and permanent endowments would not be affected. ; : Evansville College has 365 fulltime students and a total campus enrollment of 691, according to a

report publish last month. Indiana University’s enrollment, including extension schools, is 14,521. A main building, stadium, gymnasium, president’s home and another small structure, all in the eastern residential section of Evansville, comprise the school’s physical properties. ‘

NEW RADIO STATION MAY SELL” AMERICA

Blanket Coverage South of Rio Grande Promised.

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 20 (U. P.).—A new type of powerful short wave radio transmitter, described as America’s answer to Nazi radio invasion of South America, was being installed today on Treasure Island, site of the Golden Gate International Exposition, The equipment has a power equal to 200,000 watts, and reportedly will be able to blanket short wave reception in any nation from Rio

Its new “beam device” permits

sending radio waves no wider than 30 degrees toward a definite objective, whereas the usual radio transmitter sends out waves on a 360-degree circle.

by Dr. E. FP. W. Alexander of New York and was said to permit broadcasting to particular countries or areas with sufficient potency to block out other foreign broadcasts. It will be used for Exposition publicity to .South America and the Orient during a trial period. After that it is to be set up at Belmont as a permanent “noncommercial station.” Although officials of General Electric, which is installing the equipment, would not comment, it was understood the new station would form part of the State Department’s announced attempt to “sell” America and democracy to South American countries. R. M. Alvord, General Electric vice president, said programs would be broadcast in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese and Japanese.
