Wheat Is 4 to V2 Cent * Higher; Corn Rises 4 to Yu Cent; Oats Up.

CHICAGO, Jan, 11 (U, P)— Wheat prices ruled firm on the Chicago Board of Trade today on buying in sympathy with a higher Liverpool market. Corn was higher. At the end of the first hour wheat was up % to % cent, corn up % to % cent, and oats unchanged to % cent higher.

ing of wheat was more than enough to offset selling by ‘houses with foreign and shipping connections. Liverpool wheat closed % to 1 cent higher on late covering, after Argentine offers had depressed the market early. There was some hope that the London wheat conference would accomplish something constructive, Winnipeg wheat worked fractionally higher, Foreign demand for North Amer-

night and early today. The Government weekly report said that rains of the past few days |r had given partial relief to winter wheat in dry areas. The weather |go map showed little precipitation in the Southwest. The forecast was for unsettled weather, except in Kansas and Nebraska. Light receipts, buying by export interests, and a sharp upturn at Buenos Aires were constructive influences in the local corn market, It was rumored that a cargo of corn had been worked to the United Kingdom. Local grain receipts included an estimated 38 cars of corn and 14 cars of wheat.

NEW YORK, Jan. 11 (U, P.).~— Steel mills of the nation are scheduled to operate at 51.7 per cent of capacity this week, up 1 point or 2 per cent from the preceding week’s

0

Institute reported today. Last week operations were sched5 |uled at 50.7 per cent, a better than per cent from' the restricted level

1938. g The improvement for this week|1 was slightly smaller than had been anticipated ‘in some quarters, but was not out of line with expecta60 | tions in trade quarters in view of the fact that while inquiries for steel are slightly better, they have not yet reached the volume anticipated. Producers, it is indicated, are gearing their output closely to consumption and are not as yet building up inventories to any measureable degree, The current week's rise was somewhat smaller than seasonal, but that was offset largely by the fact that last week’s rebound was more than seasonal.
