Advances Reflect Large Volume of Mortgage Transactions.
'Total-Home Loan bank advances to member financial institutions in Indiana and Michigan reached an

The association reported that mortgage loans were made by members totaling $7,865,569, which was 43 per cent of the total value of loans made in the County amounting to $18,288,418, .Handle’ 1098 Mortgages Banks and trust companies in the County handled 1098 mortgages, representing 15.5 per cent of the mortgage volume and 20.5 per cent of the total value while insurance companies handled 617 mortgages, or 8.7 per cent of the volume and 17.4 per cent of the total value, according to the association’s report. The percentage of mortgage ‘volume handled by all other institutions was 18.3, the report said, representing a value of 19 per cent of the total. ‘Federal Home Loan Bank officials said the home mortgage loans made by its member institutions totalled $35,244,000 for 1938. : The bank’s year-end statement showed total assets were $20,432,926, compared with $17,831,840 in 1937. Times Special - NEW YORK, Jan. 9.—Engineering construction awards for the short week due to the New Year holiday amounted to $86,995,000, and are the highest since the week ending June 24, 1937, according to Engineering News-Record. Awards are 46 per cent above the preceding week and 77 per cent above the corresponding week in 1938. Public construction is at the highest level since Jan. 7, 1936, and is 59 per cent above the preceding week and 146 per cent above a year ago. Private awards are 7 and 40 per cent lower, respectively, than the preceding week and a year ago. Public building construction for the week, amounting to $32,400,000, is the highest on record, and is par-
