court-long before the boys went into their maneuvers. I called on Budge in the dressing room. He was, the personification of calm.
Vines Nervous
Vines, although an old campaigner in the pro ranks, looked like a shimmy dancer in a preview. He tried to sign an autograph, but was _so nervous the pen shook between his fingers. It wasn’t even a contest. Vines, softened by an easy rule in his own field, couldn’t match the fire and determination of a newcomer to the moneyed marts. Perhaps Budge was a bit sore about the statements of Vinnie Richards and 'a few
others. He'd been tagged as a lucky :
kid who'd been pushing over soft opposition. A lot of the experts agreed he'd be duck soup for the
+ first real tennis player he met.
But they forgot a lot of things. . They . forgot, for instance, that Budge trimmed every amateur in sight without being pushed. He went through Wimbledon and ‘didn’t lose a set—the first man to achieve that feat. He rang up the grand ‘slam of tennis—the French, English, _ Australian and U. S. titles. He produced when necessary. Vines never did. , . Of course, you always have a - galaxy of Doubting Thomases who shriek blue murder. “It’s My Living”
They say: “How can two guys dress in the same” room, eat together, sleep in the same hotel and go through a long tour without having something in common? They're Just like a couple of wrestlers.” Well, that’s one idea. But once you get to know such fellows as Vines and Budge, you forget such suspicions. “It’s my living,” says Vines. “Certainly I'm friendly with Don. But I want to kick the devil out of him on the courts. If I stay the top professional, it means a lot of money in my bank account. If I don’t I'll have to give up tennis and stick to golf.”
Vinnie Richards Criticizes
On the last crack, Vinnie Richards, the old amateur, happened to be in the vicinity. “You'll have to give up golf for a year, or kiss your tennis goodby,” remarked the good-looking veteran
who turned pro for C. C. Pyle back |
in ,1926, with Suzanne Lenglen. “Your timing is terrible, and your backhand is worse than that. In my opinion, you're undertennised. You can’t expect to play Fred Peiry every day and beat a kid who's been getting first-class competition.” : + Vines didn’t seem much enthused when informed of Vinnie’s statement. 2
“Gold had nothing to do with it,” |
he insisted. “It was mostly my backhand. I couldn’t hit the ground with my hat off the port-side.”
One Minor Grid
Change Is Made
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Jan. 4 (U. P.), — Members of the National Football Rules Committee went home today after making one minor change in the gridiron playing code and ordering equipment changes designed to reduce injuries. The only rule change made during ‘a three-day convention adjourned last night decrees that in the case of a forward. pass all ineligible men must remain on the line of scrimmage until the pass is thrown. Failure to do so will be considered interference and a penalty of 15 ‘yards will be inflicted from the
point where the ball was snapped
The play will count as a down. / Protective padding on the outside of thigh guards was increased from three-eighths of an inch to onehalf inch. The shape and construction of cleats also was changed. Mandatory use of head protectors ‘and soft-knee pads was voted. |,
