Saaton and Drought i Provide Ever-Normal } | Granary Trial.
i ww HINGTON, Dec. 31 (U. P.).— { Sharp curtailment of winter wheat acres Pe combined with severe fall Ydrought throughout the Middle Fes} indicated today 1933 may see ithe | first test of the .New Deal's javsrinormal granary. e ever-normal granary was one ‘of the underlying theories of the ifarm bill passed in the last session fof Congress and is intended to consserve surpluses following bumper Yerop years and make them availsable when harvests are small.
. Next year also will be the first
bin which the new Agricultural Adfjustment Act will apply to wheat. ‘The Department has announced it ‘will attempt to reduce total acre‘age from more than 70, 000,000 :planted for harvest in 1938, 93. ,600,000. :
| ' Granaries Are Bulging
"preliminary estimates of 1838 ‘total wheat production show that ‘farmers will raise barely enough ‘during the coming season to satisfy |
‘normal domestic demands. The
‘forecast is based on the assump- |
ition that spring wheat seedings will ‘show the same degree of acreage! ‘reduction as recorded in winter] ‘wheat plantings. : Heavy crops for the last two iyears, resulting from expanded | Dan and favorable weather,
thave granaries throughout the coun-
try bulging with the surplus. A op of over 875,000,000 bushels in| Shor left approximately 154, 000,000 he ter domestic consumption and exrts had been taken care of. A 038 crop of more than 930,000,000 “bushels raised the carryover to iaround 285,000,000.
! | The Department's crop reporting ‘Hoard said farmers complied with it e acreage reduction program in ‘winter wheat by cutting seeding Mom 56 million acres to 46 million. ack of rain has reduced growing ; onditions to 72 per cent of normal. : If those circumstances apply to swheat planted in the spring, experts “aid a total crop of 680 million ‘bushels is likely. Normal consumpdion in this country is 683 million.
4 If these prospects materialize, it awill be the first time a surplus has een made available purposely to strengthen the position of farmers n a year of shortage. The 285 milion bushels placed in storage under {the Administration’s crop loan and Jcrop insurance programs will be {available to maintain the United States’ export market at around 100

WASTE IS| UTILIZED TO GET VITAMINS
LONDON, Dec, 31 (U.
