knowledge everywhere, and so to view the universe as broadly and impartially as possible. 2. In order to understand the various facts and their interrelations we must always use abstractions, that is, conceptual tools of a logical or mathematical nature. 3. The transcendent importance of love and goodwill in all human relations is shown by their mighty beneficent effect upon the individual and society. Anycne is free to agree or disagree with these articles of faith, Dean Birkhoff emphasized, because they are not verifiable experimentally or strictly demonstrable. In opposition to his belief that the levels of knowledge are to be taken as equally real, he states that there might be set the opposing belief that every fact is ultimately expressible in purely physical terms.
DRUG CLAIMED + INEBRIETY GURE
Benzedrine Replaces ‘Lift’ Sought -From Alcohol, Doctor Reports.
NEW YORK, Dec. 28 (U. P).— The use of the drug benzedrine to cure habitual drunkenness was reported to the Association for Research in Nervous and Mental Disesses ‘today by -Dr. Wilfred Bloomberg of Harvard University. The cure is based on the premise that drunkards drink for the effect rather than the taste. Dr. Bloomberg thinks drunkenness is a disease contracted by persons with warped personalities. Benzedrine gives them the “lift” they want, and psychiatry can then iron out their warped mentalities. : Dr. Bloomberg used benzedrine in the form: of pills on 35 alcoholic cases in 18 months. He found, that in ¢ mild way, the drug released the patients from depression and
shyness, raised their spirits, enabled P
thern to become “life of the party” conversationalists and otherwise stimulated them as well as if they were slightly drunk. "The drug was probably non-habit-forrping, he said, or in any event it was a lesser habit than alcohol. He sai¢ it should be taken only under a physician’s guidance, however.
Discover New Method To Make ‘Invisible’ Glass
WASHINGTON, Dec. 28 (U. P.).
If this process, presbyopia, takes place early in life, the individual hasn’t much time to live, Dr. Berhstein pointed out. If, on the other hand, its onset is long delayed, the individual can look forward to a ripe old age, providing an automobile, a germ or similar agent doesn’t get him first. Early presbyopia, he indicated, is; accompanied by early onset of other aging factors. Similarly, late presbyopia was accompanied by late occurrence of other symptoms of advancing age. lation growth by having three or more children, P. K. Whelpton of the Central Statistical Board, a Federal agency charged with correlating government statistical studies, and Nellie E. Jackson of the Scripps Foundation for Research in Population Problems, informed the statisticians. Childless marriages have increased to one out of every five marriages, they declared on the basis of birth rate studies. Marriages resulting in five or more births are outnumbered four to one by all other marriages, but they contribute more than threefourths of all our population growth. The proportion of childless marriages has been increasing, their studies show. It was almost twice as high, according to birth rates for 1929-31 as it was 10 years previously. In addition the proportion of married couples who could have four, five, six or other larger number of births declined by between 25 and 40 per cent during the same period. ; Belief that America’s Negro population is outstripping the white population in growth is unfounded in fact, Dr. Bernard D.
