Budge and Helen Moody
(Sixth of a Series) By HARRY GRAYSON
, NEA Service Sports Writer NEW YORK. Dec. 28.—Don Budge completed a campaign of unparal-
./leled achievement on three con-
tinents. No one before has held at the same time the American, British, French and Australian men’s singles championships. ! Yet it was trim Moody who furnished the ‘more dramatic moments of the tennis season . . . at 32 and after two years of tournament inactivity. Helen Hull Jacobs’ unfortunate

After overcoming the handicap of a shoulder injury earlier in the tournament, Miss Jacobs pulled a tendon in the ninth game of the opening set of the final .. . hobbled through the next seven pathetic games ... and was beaten, 6-4, 6-0. The accident spoiled bright prospects for another such match as the pair turned in when Mrs. Moody so pluckily came from behind to catch and overtake her rival of more than a decade in the exact setup three years before. : A few days earlier, Mrs. Moody finished with a spectacular burst to repulse left-handed Kay Stammers, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, to clinch Amerijca’s eighth consecutive triumph in Wightman Cup competition.

Police Seek Five Others as Former Assistant Gives ‘Inside ‘Story.’
NEW YORK, Dec. 28 (U. P.)— Police held a woman and two men today and sought five more persons, all on suspicion of having blackmailed F. Donald Coster, the swindling president of McKesson ‘& Robbins, Inc, who killed himself when he was exposed as Philip Musica, an exconvict. : The prisoners, belligerent and uncommunicative, were Mary Brandino, 37: her brother, Joseph, 61, and Walter H. Cragg, 56, a disbarred lawyer imprisoned in 1914 for embezzling a client’s funds. The other suspects were not named. Together, they were believed to have extorted most or all
|the $150,000 a year that Coster-
Musica swindled from his company. Faces Two Charges
The three were held on Federal charges of using the mails to defraud and “conspiring with others to extort sums of money from Philip Musica.” They were among the few persons who knew of CosterMusica’s 18-year masquerade. It was reported Miss Brandino had received $8000 from CosterMusica last year. Detective John P. McAuliffe said that information about the Brandinos had been supplied by Benjamin Simon, who is held as a material witness and is believed to have served Coster-Musica as go-between in arms and munitions dealings. The shortage was in the crude drugs department, which was in fact nonexistent, but which was listed on the books with $18,000,000 in assets. ' First lucid details of how Costera-Musica kept this dummy department concealed were supplied yesterday by John H. McGloon, who had been the company’s vice president in charge of accounting since 1928.

GROSS INCOME TAX BLANKS MAILED OUT
Nearly 500,000 State Gross Income Tax information blanks were being mailed today to employers, Clarence A. Jackson, Tax Division Director, announced today. The forms list employees who received $1000 or more during 1938, he said. “Employers should fill in the forms and return them to the division as soon as possible,” Mr. Jackson said. “The majority of employees receive copies, which can be used in filling out individual form returns.” Mr. Jackson advised taxpayers to file their returns early to avoid the rush before the Jan. 31 deadline.
FEDERAL BANK LENDING DECREASES
More Purchases of U. S. Obligations.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 29 (U. P.). —A moderate reduction in lending
assets of Federal Reserve Member Banks for the week ended Dec. 21 was more than offset-by increased purchases of U. S. Government obligations, according to the weekly condition statement issued by the system today. ne The report, covering operations of member institutions in 101 leading cities, placed total loans and investments of the banks at $21,742,000,000. up 238 million dollars from the preceding week. Total loans fell 23 million dollars to $8,473,000,000, principally reflecting a contraction in commercial, industrial and agricultural loans whigh fell 24 million dollars at New York City banks and million dollars at all centers. Loans to brokers and dealers declined five million dollars at New York and four million dollars at all centers, while loans to banks were
porting centers, with New York banks accounting for 13 million dollars of the decline. Holdings of U. S. Government direction obligations rose 22 million dollars at New York and showed an aggregate increase of 253 million

Carty, with a broken thigh, will hear the game from an Oklahoma City hospital bed. Jennings went to Florida but a double ankle fracture will kesp him out of action. Another regular, Guard Jerry Bolton, is on the ailing list with a bad knee and there is little chance he can play. But Head Coach Tom Stidham, who has to gulp pills during games because of nervous in-, digestion, isn’t worrying because he already has suitable replacements for those men. Oklahoma has | a reputation for being a power team, but the Sooner passing game has been one of the most effectual—and least. publicized —in the nation.
- Completes 107 Passes
. In 10 games, Oklahoma made 1330 yards rushing, and 1101 passing. The scorers threw 211 passes and clicked with 107 of them, which is a better than fair average. They rolled up 185 points in 10 games and held their opponents to two touchdowns and an average of 40.6 yards rushing and 53.9 passing per game. The hub of the offensive is Hugh McCullough, 185-pound senior. He plays tailback, does the kicking, most of the passing and is the team’s best line-plunger. ' Head man on the line is Oklahoma’s best known player—End Waddy Young who made several allAmerica teams. The line averages 201 pounds, 15 more than Tennessee. Other cogs in the Oklahoma machine are Gilford Duggin, a tackle; Earl Crowder, a savage blocking back; Justine Bowers, a 212-pound sophomore tackle, and Bob Seymour and Otis Rogers, halfbacks.
